does anyone know if its better to drop the pan to change trans fluid ? or now they have this machine that flushes it out. but the thing about that is you cant change thans filter. anyone out there know whats the best to do drop the pan or flush it out ?? thanks

My reccomendation would be both. Dropp the pan but save the fluid in a clean container. Put that fluid back in after you change the filter and then have it flushed with a flushing machine. You can not change more than about nine quarts just dropping the pan, while the flusher will change all 16........

Your other option is to shorten your service interval to 20k and just change the nine quarts and filter every time......with the shorter interval the leftover fluid becomes less of a worry.......

Also something to remember is your truck takes Mercon SP, which is a special blend and DO NOT use anything other than that in a torqueshift....

This is how I and many others do a trans flush.
Pull the drain plug and drain the pan, this will get out about 6-7 quarts, if you want to change the filer pull the pan and do so, but Ford says it is not needed???
Next pour 7 quarts of clean oil down the dipstick tube,
Pull the return line from the tranny and attatch a clear hose about 4-5ft long,1/2'hose works fine, the rear most line is the return line.
Put end of hose in a bucket, start the truck wait 5 sec shift to R wait 5 sec shift to N and go thru all the gears, have somebody watching the hose, when you see air bubbles shut the truck off and fill with seven more quarts, follow the same sequence of shifting thru the gears, this will be 14 quarts thru the tranny, when you see air bubbles again pull the hose and reattatch, fill the pan back up until proper level is reached. This will do the same thing the flush machine does without the $$$ You want to do this test when it is at operating temp, or the oil will not be flushed thru the coolers.

NC Hornet,

Can you clarify this procedure? THe air bubble part is confusing me you drained 7 qts, then took off the return line and put it in a bucket, then I assume it started draining the old fluid when you start the motor and go through the gears, then you say to stop when you see air bubbles and add 7 more quarts for a total of 14, then you say repeat the shifting procedure.

I'm not clear on the air bubbles and also if you repeat the procedure a second time wouldn't you waste 7 extra qts of fluid?

Sorry for being stupid here I just don't wquite grasp it.

I do however really appreciate the fact you are letting us know how to do it and saving me and everyone else the money to pay someone else to do it!

Thanks!

Aaron

TransFlush?

Hey guys, I have had my trans recently rebuilt and it has been running hotter than it should. I was going to have the entire tranny drained incl the Torque Coverter and was going to put in synthetic. As far as the temps I was told that I might want to have the oem Cooler flushed to insure that it is not clogged. I recently added a MGHytek Pan and a Temp Gauge, and I have noticed that the tranny at highway speed 76-80 MPH the tran runs at about 215 to 225, W/O any load (NO Trailer). I am going to install a better Trans Cooler w/ a Fan. I am gettin it from Disc Pwr Prts "Larry" A reg Vendor. But I Want to know what I should do or check prior to the cooler install with the hopes of dropping the temps by 10-15 degrees minimum prior to the cooler install. The fluid that I added when I installed the pan was Mercon V. And I changed the filter to the 4x4 model to match the depth of the new pan.

Marc if you read this I saw your previous post about mercon SP ONLY . ? Does this apply to my 2002 4100R ? If it does apply have I killed my tranny by putting Mercon V in it. about 9 qts. If I need to, I will drain it ASAP and install "SP" ASAP , Thanks..

the "SP" is for torqshift's.

Yes the SP is just for the 6.0L torqueshifts, however I put a new and about 4 quart larger pan from PML on my 6.0 and my egt's are high as well and my truck is now sitting at the shop waiting for someone to figure out what is wrong. I was hitting about 1000 on the egt meter at about 55mph with no load, and with the way I drive,my truck would be dead. If you find out what is causing your truck to run hot let me know so I can have something else to check into. As I have tried everything else!!

Tranny Temp HOT

I have had a larger cooler installed and,,,,
I am going to piggy back an additional cooler from ATS that has a Fan
mounted to the cooler.
This should not limit the location , or orientation of where I mount this 2nd cooler. I will post results from both the new cooler I have had installed (at the same time I changed the InterCooler) and later in about 1-2 wks how much the temp still drops with the addition of the ATS unit w/ fan.:)

PS : I am sure you installed the deep 4x4 filter w/ the longer pick-up tube, when you changed the pan ???.
I also have a 7.3L PSD w/ a 4100R. I don't know if it is truly apples to apples
I let you know with hopes that it helps.
I think mine Trans temp has gone up due to my Heavy Right Foot and my great working Radar Detector:woot with high HP #'s.
Stay Safe , talk at ya soon.

Didnt try the filter as mine is 2wd didn't think it would work?? Might have helped but mine ended up in the shop and I have to have a new convertor and other parts put in, so it won't be back for another 4 days. Since I have no money to spend right now I can't buy the nice Suncoast tranny and convertor, so its just stock for me right now.:(
