HELP: I want to get an address for a military person who is either in Iraq or Pakistan to send them a holiday package. Also tell me where I can find the do's and don'ts on what to send, also maybe a time frame. I would prefer to send to some one from Oregon but anywhere will do.
Thanks
as someone who is over here, i'd say it would be really hard to figure out how to choose a "winner"
i'd offer an alternative idea-
donate either a package deal to a wounded veteran, OR sponsor either a family trip to visit their wounded vet, or send a soldier who is injured but can travel back home to see their family over the holidays. many military families are strapped for money to cover the holidays for children and still either go see a badly hurt vet in a hospital far away, with all the hotel and related expenses, or can't afford to bring the vet home for a temporary visit.
each of the services has an aid society, the army's is "Army Emergency Relief". call the red cross, they will be able to help you get in touch with any service agency you might be interested in.
and, don't forget, many of our vets are young, and don't have wives or children, they don'r get anywhere's near the publicity or assistance to see parents and/or brothers/sisters.
if you want to stick to soldiers from oregon, look in the state government pages of the phone book, get ahold of the state adjutant general's office. that's a fancy term for the commander of the state guard. the army reserves are separate from this, and have a different command structure. i don't know of any way to sort out oregon residents from the active duty force.
good luck, and i'm sure you'll help someone have a better holiday season this year.
Thank you all for the replies. mucho many responded
