im sure you could weld the axel's together, is that your talking about or the axel housing? I know the locals weld their axels together for the races cars.
I strongly suggest you just go get a locker. Welding the axle or aka Lincoln Locker does work but is not strong. Stump you have a great looking truck and it runs great too. Please do not destroy your rear end by welding it up. It will only cost you more money in the long run.
Now if you were building a demo derby car then I would be all for it.
The axle tubes can but the diff housing should not (it is cast). The fluid depends on how much you are going to weld. If you just need to tack on something small then I wouldn't worry about the fluid but if your going to weld on the shock mounts or something else big then that will get hot enough to boil the fluid. In that case I would drain the fluid, do the welding, then add the fluid after the weld cools.
oh ok................Depending on what your planing on welding to your rearend I would say you should be fine, With my Lifted chevy we cut off the spring mounts, turned the axel and re welded the spring plates. we did drain all the fluids from the rear, and it had all the gears out of it also.
You should be alright because your far enough away it shouldnt hurt. Just make sure you unhook the batteries or you will smoke the computer.
