I just decided to run my truck through and i looked down and the tach was at about 4600 rpm! it wouldnt shift out of first thats y i looked down! WTF Is Going On!! I thought the SCT wouldnt let it go tha far! Its gonna freaking blow up if it lets it get that high! I dont even want to get on it now! It blew out some white smoke and acted funny for about a mile or 2 after it happened...Anybody know why this happened and will it do it again if i try to run it through again...

ya but it should already be set....now everytime i take off from a stop theres a little puff of whiteish grey smoke...im f****** pissed it let it go that high...

xtremeRace with converter only locked in 4th up..

all of the custom tunes I have are pre-set limited to about 4150-4250 I think. You can easily change them up or down in the options menu on your Xcal but if you haven't messed with them then you shouldn't have been able to rev that high. I'd unload the program, and then reload your tunes from your computer to your Xcal again. I'd also call whoever wrote the tune you had that happen in and discuss it with them, they might be able to provide you with a better explanation and a fix.

also when i let off the throttle now from a steady 65mph it goes down fine to 60 then sometimes it gives a little jerk...

Mmmm, now I can't explained the white puffs...but it sounds like the truck went into its "Panic"/"Limp" mode...it only has happened to me twice. Once I got hard on it coming out of a station after just recenetly switching tunes. The truck "panic" like it didnt know what to do and bounced off the rev limiter then eventually shifting and ran fine. The second time was coming back from NC and racing a Tacoma, we were going so fast and hard my truck defueled I believe and bounced off the rev limiter.

I am going to send this thread to Eric at IDP and see if he can chime in.

that would be great...i thought the limp/panic mode was for when you are about out of fuel...

#12 ·
ok thanks...im scared that it screwed something up...you gotta pay to play though....

Nah...I have had it freak out on me and I didn't know what the he!! was going on.. but after talking to Terri (onefastgranny) and Eric, they explained about it.

So, Eric was on when I was writing earlier, but went offline, he should be back on though later. :dunno: If he isn't, email him your concerns. He can also check the RPM limits on your tune.

Now, with all that said...with the amount of power we throw through these trucks, we are ALL running the risk of something going bad. Even stock trucks break. You just never know. It is a risk we all play with.

#15 ·
ya, but its no fun when they freak out like that.....

#16 ·
NO ARGUMENT HERE!!! :D

Just talk to Eric with your concerns when you can. And of course keep an eye on everything and maybe even baby it a little till you know everything is good.

Of course, once mine calmed down and was shifting...I was back on it hard to replicate the problem, but it didn't do it again. :dunno: So, I wrote it off as a computer freak out.

thanks for all your help! i only put her to the floor about 1 or 2times a week...maybe i need to start running it a little harder...is his email sales@innovativediesel.com

No problem, no need to totally freak out yet.:thud::lol2:

Yeah, he checks it regularly.:thumb:

I drive mine hard pretty much every day. The pedal sees the floor on a regular basis.:D
I'll keep this subscription to check back in after you talk to him.

I have a bit of OCD when it comes to my truck...Again thanks for your help....

#20 ·
Sure thing, thats why we are all here...Like I said, I am 99.9% sure this is what happened. But I always like to get things confirmed from him just to be sure. And this goes for any tunes...like say you were running the Looney, I would think the same answer, but would recommend you contacting DJ or Vivian.

And I hear ya about the OCD...any new "noise", vibration, bump in the road...I am like, "What was that?!?!?!":lol2:

i e-mailed him...i swear 95% of the time i drive with the radio off cause i think i heard something...You dont think i should be worried about my rpm's getting that high do ya...

#22 ·
I have seen mine hit the 4400 mark...and in the 1/4 mi my truck doesn't even shift till the 4000 mark. Once and awhile hitting a little high I don't think should be a major concern. As long as you don't hold it there too long. Which it sounds like you didn't.

#23 ·
maybe i should ask him to set it at 3950 or 4000 if its not already...i think they are closed until after thanks giving.. the email said they are closed nov 11th through thanks giving...

.i think they are closed until after thanks giving.. the email said they are closed nov 11th through thanks giving...
My bad, I knew they were closed last week cause of vacation...didn't realize he was closed now also.

If you are still overly concerned until then...either put in one of the tamer tunes like the Xtreme Street or run stock till Eric gets a chance to check your files.

It seems that 4000 is the threshold that you want to stay below on a "stock" 6.0, but limited 4200 rpm peaks won't hurt them. The stock rev limiter is set at 4400 and Eric doesn't mess with that. You can set it lower with your SCT. I doubt that the actual rpm was 4600. The factory tachs are known to be less than precise and it could have bounced that high.

If you lower the rev limiter, don't forget to lower your shift points as well. I experimented with the rev limiter and didn't change the shift points. The first time I hammered it, it defueled against the limiter because the shift point was higher at WOT than where I had set the rev limit.

Sustained rpms above 4000 have proved to be detrimental to the low pressure pump drive gears. It's usually a problem on higher hp 6.0s, but it still scares me.

#25 ·
i think ill ask him to change that...i dont want to mess anything up...im reloading my tunes to my xcal right now...

#27 ·
im gonna run the xtremestreet until he gets back to me...my bad they are open...says closed through the 16th and back open on the 19th...
