Just got my new issue ( Jan 08 ) of Diesel World. On the rumor has it page they "update" us on the Ford vs Navistar war. Once again I see our engines described as the "unsuccessful 6.0 liter mill". My engine has been pretty successful over the last 3 years! How about yours? Fire Departments, Ambulances, Contractors still use them. I know all about the early production issues and I feel for those who got stung. I just get tired of hearing all the crap about the 6.0. International ( Navistar) calls thiers the VGT 365, has that been called unsuccessful? Diesel World represents itself as being an authority and resource for the Diesel enthusiast. Letting crap like that in an article is just more than an oversight, it shows that they must print press releases with out reviewing them for accuracy. I bet they sell a lot of magazines to people like us with "unsuccessful" engines! They sure try to sell us things to help blow them up! ( Humor!)
I dont know about that. Larrys 05 Dodge with just tuner and module puts down 520hp and 900 fpt! That was with a bad transmission and cat. He is finishing up the trans tonight for the NC meet. Hope he gets it done. That is one bad thing about them...the trans sucks, but so does the 4R100 and the allison. One thing I really mis from my 05 Ford was the 5R110. I'm still a Ford guy. The Dodge truck itself leaves alot to be desired.
The only Non-Ford truck in my townhouses is a Dodge Hemi. The other three (mine included) are all Ford Diesels. The other two Fords are 6.0's though. I'm representing the 7.3L crowd. I talked to one of the 6.0 guys and he knows nothing about diesels other than they are good ofr plowing snow...the only thing he uses his truck for...save for the occasional trip to the store.
I've killed that Hemi too many times...it's getting to be more of an anoyance than fun!!!:hehe:
The 6.0 is a VERY good engine of course the very first ones had problems but after that, it was and still is an extremely hard working and reliable diesel engine. by the way yall need to ditch "diesel world" and pick up Diesel Power no bashing, looots of news, how to articles, readers rides, the whole nine yards. I would highly recommend it
What is considered the early 6.0? Up to what build date? Is there any worry buying one with low mileage if still under warranty? Can they fix all the bugs, or are they with you for the life of the truck?
The guy with the Mega Cab is a great guy and neighbor! He got scared off Fords from the 6.0 scuttlebutt. With the intake and pipe on that thing we can hear him heading home from quite a way off!
I also get Diesel Power, and soon Eight lug, thats mostly eye candy though! Power Stroke Registry Quarterly is very informative, but not cheap. They have a pay to play warning as far as mods go, in every issue! Warranty beware!
thats pretty b.a. i just might have to check into that. well i gotta get off but i guess in conclusion i would say the 6.0 engine is a very very good engine and would recommend the engine to anyone (ok just try to find 05'-07' to be safe) mi padre has a 06' KR F250 and i love drivin that thing, fast as sh*t! only has a stage 2 afe intake and magnaflow 4'' ss exhaust and when i punch that pedal it throws me in the seat : )
If you disconnect the EGR like someone else mentioned, will that make most issues for an 04 go away? As I stated, I am looking at my neighbors 04 with 30K miles, under factory warranty, and he has had no problems, and has babied it with care, oil changes, etc?
I need it for hauling long distances, that is why I do not want to be on the side of the road in a strange place, especially if I know it is a problem vehicle before purchase.
Does this stuff show within the first 20k miles or so? A salesman " friend " said by 7500 miles you will know what you have, I find that is true for most new vehicles I have bought. I just do not see my 6.0 becoming a time bomb! Especially with proper use and maintenence. I believe you just can't use these like the family taxis, am I wrong?
Diesel Power is great. The latest issue gives step by step stud install for the 6.0. They claim the 6.0 is bulletproof after the studs.. aside from the EGR cooler (block it off who needs it)
My 06 has 59k on it no problems. over 40k with a tuner.
Ford(6.0) pros = looks good, nice interior, great towing, good engine/tranny, sounds great, sounds like a jet
cons = EGR cooler breaks sometimes, headbolts stretch sometimes
Dodge pros = cummins, blows more smoke for some reason
cons = sounds like a piece of farm equipment, 6cyl just isnt as cool as 8, Body/interior falls apart as you drive off the lot, glass tranny.
Had a friend with dodge 1500 he hit a pot hole and broke his leaf spring. His truck had a gangsta lean untill he traded it it for an F150
I have mostly drove Fords for the past 30 years. We have three Fords in our garage now. Had good ones and bad ones. Have also had good ones and bad ones in other brands. A coworker who is a diehard Chevy guy, bought a new 03 F250, 6.0, auto, 4x4 based on my recomendation from the great experience I have had with my 02 F350 4x4. His truck was a piece of junk! It had to be towed several times, loaded with a 5K goose neck and livestock. Thank goodness the 7.3 was up to the task of hauling the trailer and animals on to thier desitination. His truck was so bad, that he finally traded it for a Dodge. Regardless of the quality of the body, the Dodge has never broken down. Ford should have done more R&D before releasing the 6.0. Granted they may have gotten them straightened out now, but for what they cost, many people will not accept being part of the experiment. I know of one person, who gave Ford a chance, but will never buy from them again. And I still love my 02...
