Couple of Problems

A while back I made the decision to purchase a K&N cold air intake (FIPK) for my PSD. I am now learning that K&N filters allow too much dust to pass. My question is: are there other filter elements that will fit in place of the K&N filter on this intake, or would the filter wrap K&N makes solve the dust problem? Or should I just replace the entire intake with something else?

Also, I am noticing a "slip" type of feeling in the driveline both when I am stopped, then accelerate, and also when I use the brakes. It almost feels like a bad u-joint type of feeling. Then if I get on the accelerator a little bit after I feel the jerk, I feel a vibration, bouncy type of feeling for a couple of seconds, then it quits. So anyway I get under the truck and grab the driveline and try to wiggle it back and forth by the center support bearing. I can see a shiny area on the driveshaft near that bearing, and the shaft seems to move more than it should inside the support. It looks like maybe the support bearing is gone, but not real sure. I would think the support should hold the driveshaft a bit more solid.

Any help would be appreciated!

what you are feeling is a normal charactarisic of the superduty vehicles...either loaded or unloaded depending on what you prefer.... The vibration can be fixed, but only one of two ways usually. What you have to do to fix it is shimm the carrier bearing down to correct the driveline angle. Once its fixed, it will do it either loaded or unloaded. For example......If you shimm it so that it is perfect unloaded, it will do it loaded and visa versa......unfortuanetley driveline angles are such a precise science that the truck would basically have to have NO suspention on it to not do what you are feeling......Ford dealers are able to get kits to fix this and there is a TSB on it. The TSB basically explains what i just told you, but longer....and gives a part number for the shim kit.

Nice..

Thanks for the info, Marc!

Man, this is pretty weird. So even if I bought a new carrier bearing it would probably do the same thing? It definitely has some play in that support area. I'll take a look at the shimm kit you are talking about. Should I try and put a new support bearing in it and see if it helps? Or would that be a waste of time?

**A.F.E. - Stage2**

Recently, I bought the Stage2 system. I did not get the "Pro-Guard7" filter. I stayed w/ the "5-layer-Magnum-Force". I figure instead of paying the extra $50.00 "+" premium for the PG7, I would just put a "pre-filter" on the existing filter. In So. California this application should be fine. Anyhow, wow! What a difference in how much air is "pulled" in. Until you do an "intake" mod, you really don't realize how much the PowerStroke is starved for air. The cool factor is the "sound". Between the "intake" of air, and the release of "unused" boost (the whooosh factor) this will change the personality of your truck. Here's something interesting (to me) is that after the install of the Stage2 my e.g.t.'s went up. I believe this is due to the fact that my stock exhaust system is restricting all of that new incoming airflow. So, after tomorrow I'll have a 4" MBRP TurboBack system installed, and I believe that this will lower them farther than they've ever been. The main reason I went w/ the A.F.E. system was that both the Cummins and PowerStroke guys are believers... The positive info far out weighs the negative.

I will look into the shim idea. Thanks for the good info. For $35 and an hour (or so);) of my time it might not hurt to replace the bearing and see what that does, if that don't do it I will be shimming it sounds like.

Do you think I'd be wasting my time to buy a filter wrap for this k&n? I know I should just trash it but after just recently purchasing the FIPK it will be a nearly impossible sell with the boss.

Thanks for the info!

it all depends on the conditions you tend to put your truck through. If you see dirt roads more than twice a month...i would say get rid of it and cut your losses....if you basically just see hiway and in town driving, put a pre filter on it and youll probably be just fine...

Yeah

I was afraid I'd need to chuck the k&n. It's funny as heck, I tell my buddies what I am hearing on these forums and they defend that k&n 100%! They don't really want to hear that they don't filter as well as others do(obviously because they have them in their vehicles). I mostly drive my truck on oiled roads but I take it up hunting and fishing on dirt roads frequently. It's not like I'm off roading or anything, but letting dirt into the cylinders makes me cringe. It would have helped to do a little research first! That K&N is gone.

Thanks Marc, and I'll let you know what I find out about this support bearing. I am sure I will have to shim it like you said but that old bearing just looks and feels really worn out. And what's to say that the new one won't eventually do the same thing. Can I shim it while it's assembled or do I have to take the drive line off?

the shimming is pretty dang easy..just undo the two bolts holding the carrier bearing to the frame crossmember.....put the shims in, and bolt it back up. If by chance you "run out of bolt"...which ive only seen on lifted trucks.....you would also need to get a longer boldt with the same thread and pitch to use the same J nut.....but i doubt youll need to shim more than a half inch...

Marc was right..

I replaced the carrier bearing, and the other one was pretty rotted, needed to be changed but I am still getting some vibration when I get on the gas.:(

I called Ford and the parts guy said they don't make a shim kit for my truck? I am going to have to call around it to find one looks like. Marc is the man. I REALLY hope the shims work (that is, if I can find them of course). That vibration is pretty annoying. How come my buddy's super duty doesn't do this?

Thanks again Marc!

glad to hear you got it fixed!!!!

one thing to remember though, when you pull a trailer that vibration will come back, if the trailer is heavy enough to change your driveline angle. The vibaration is a nusance, but not hurtfull to anything.......you can only fix it to not do it either loaded or unloaded...its rare to have a truck that doesnt do it one of those ways.....some guys just dont notice it....

AFE stage 2

I have an AFE Stage 2 filter system...what a difference. what i like about afe is the optional higher filtration filter you can get and i was told, by a AFE rep, that you only loose about 50 cfm which is somewhat noticeable but still much higher than a stock filter system. Prefilters are nice but they mainly just keep water out of your intake. Ive heard bad things about k&Ns especially here in montana...marc can vouch for that. One thing that is esspecially cool about the afe, and im sure the other ones do it, is that when you get on the throttle then snap release it you can here your turbo let off and its quite loud. That is somewhat bad for the turbo but i haven't heard a turbo bark yet so i don't know.

if you want to minimize your drive line shudder, ive found replacing the 2 pc driveshaft with a solid one helps alot. you can do it as long as you dont have a lift bigger than 8".

ive also got the k&n setup, and im thinking really hard about ditching it for the afe stg II.

Driveline shudder

A 1 piece driveline does sound logical if you want to reduce the vibration. I took care of the vibration problem by reducing the angle of the rear part of the driveline by shimming it down what ended up being around 1" total when it was done. I am getting zero vibration now. Marc says that once I put a load on it I'll probably feel some vibration come back, but for now it has worked just great.
