Differential cover leaking

I have to change the gasket and get the leak stopped, does anyone have any words of wisdom on doing the job right? Things to look for while the cover is off? I hate to do things twice!
Thanks!
Mike.

I'll have to check on that cover...thanks for the advice, I hope to have it all buttoned up Wednesday.

Get the 2008 finned aluminum cover. Clean the surface of the differential really good, use "The Right Stuff" from Permatex to put in the groove of the cover, then install the cover.

Let it sit for a few hours before filling with oil so the silicone can cure a little bit.

I battled a leak for months before doing it this way. I have been leak free for about 6 months now.

OK, have the cover back in place, waiting for a little cure time before I fill it up...does anyone put pipe dope or some sort of tape or sealant on the fill plug? It looks like it had something orange on it when I took it off...I cleaned the threads and am thinking while I wait.
Thanks,
Mike.

What kind of reaction are you talking about? I've been using Teflon tape on NPT pipe plugs for the better part of 30 years. Haven't had an issue yet.

Well, I finished up, used teflon tape on the fill plug. I was impressed that the old lube was so good looking, a dark honey color. Truck has 191k miles. The only issue I ran into was getting the gear lube back in. The rear sway bar had me stumped (couldn't get lube bottle above horizontal) until I found a section of hose that fit into the fill hole and routed it above the diff. I only managed to get three quarts in, does that sound about right?
Thanks for all the info!
Mike.
