8900 miles and they want to pull the engine!

I joined here to see what other folks have experienced. I have a 2007 F-550 bucket truck that I bought new in Aug. Began having trouble starting, rough running about a month ago. It has been in 4 times. They tried the EGR, then the EGR cooler, then found an injector that was not pressed into the seat properly, now they think it's the head gasket. Coolant is black and smells burnt. They say pulling the motor is easier than fixing it in place. I'm not a truck expert, but when I came looking on the web about this, I was shocked by all the talk about this 6.0 engine and all it's problems. Can it be fixed and be reliable? Should I push for a new engine? What have others experienced? Comments? HELP? I guess if I would have known this, I would have never bought the Ford. Thanks

With aftermarket head studs the 6.0 is pretty bullet proof. Not on par with the 7.3 because of some EGR problems, but all vehicles, especially diesels have em. Mind you they could be to a little less extent than the non diesel, but turbo charging it calls for more parts into the EGR system. The injector thing is not common, infact I've probably never seen injector, 6.0, and problem in the same sentence.

Plus 89,000 miles is under warranty, find yourself some studs and get them to put em in. If they make a fuss find another dealer. Dealers make good money off warranties it won't be that hard.

hey

Its people like that, that need to think before they open there damn mouth. That is USELESS information.

Anyway, a problem with the 6.0's is the head bolt set up. They have torque to yield bolts. On the 450's and 550's they weigh so much that they are working from the start. They are more prone to blowing the gaskets. We pull the cab to put gaskets on. On bucket trucks like yours though sometimes it can be difficult to do so pulling to motor is the way to go. Its not really too bad.

Oh and if its your truck personally have them put studs in it.

I look after a fleet of 6.0 L F-5550's and I'll tell you, the problems we have with those injectors are very common. No exaggeration...at least two trucks at the dealership every month. I don't know if its the way they drive the trucks or what but that engine simply hasn't been able to take the beating that the old 7.3 could. Steady stream of egr problems, head gaskets, last month a whole new engine due to a melted piston. Different scenario for a lot of guys who own the trucks, seem to see lots of satisfied people, but they probably don't beat the ever living crap out of their trucks.

Seriously? That can't be a stock setup... HG's and EGR probs, sure, especially on the 6.0L, but even then, there are folks that have had 0 problems. :dunno:

Oh, and there are a bunch of folks on here that beat their trucks like they hate them! They'll be chiming in here in a minute... :hehe:

FIRST OFF IF THE COOLANT IS BLACK THE MOST LIKELY PROBLEM ISNT THE HEAD GASKETS BUT MORE COMMON TO BE THE EGR COOLER , WHEN IT GIVES PROBLEMS EXHAUST SOOT GETS IN THE COOLING SYSTEM ,BEFORE JERKING THE ENGINE I WOULD START WITH THE EGR COOLER , I DONT SEE HEAD GASKETS, NOT AT THIS POINT
