10k mod question

I have a 01 psd 7.3 that I just built a 10k mod for, I used a radioshack box to house a 5 way rotary switch which I wired in several different resistors ranging from 3.9K to 30K. Exiting the box I have 2 wires which I was planning on running to the icp sensor and tying it in just like a normal install , but then I started thunkin, if I were to leave the sensor connected and tie into blue wire with the light green stripe with one wire from my control box and ground the other wire coming from my contol box this should add resistance to the circut right? if it does then I can install a toggle to turn the mod on and off. If anyone else has done this type of mod before please let me know,

Please get back to me on this if anyone knows. Thanks in advance!

One wire from the box should go the ICP, and I would run a diode in it, the other goes to ground. You can put a switch in either to be able to turn it off.

thanks overlord, I think I am understanding what your saying but I just want to be sure. I'll try to explain what I am doing in the most detail as I can. what I did was get a 5 way rotary switch so can wire up a range of resistors from 5.9k to 33k making sure I have a 10k and an 18k. so I have 2 wires comeing into my module one feeds the input of my module and the 5 outputs have diffrent resistors wired to them then they are all tied together , I checked and this does not affect the resistance. So exiting my box I have 2 wires which I could run to the icp sensor and tie it in just like the standard 10 k mod, but what I was thinking of doing is just tieing into the blue wire with green stripe on the icp with one of my wires from my module, either one I dont think it would matter and ground the other one, I just caint fighre out a way to check to see if I can do this without risking burning something, because if voltage is applied to this circut it seems as if grounding the other side would be a bad thing. Please elaborate, and thanks in advance

Many people use a toggle, there are soo many variants of this mod that it should just be called the resistor mod lol.

It's the "poor man's tuner." While Marc (who is a diesel tech) believes that with a strong HPOP it is a good idea, however I believe it's relatively risky and you chance burnin up an ICP sensor or anything else doing this mod on an expensive truck. But hey... what do I know... I work on computers :D

overlord , also if your able to get back to me please let me know if you have any info on doing these mods with a diode. I found one but warned it had high egt's This may have been a hot version, if you were following my other posts I have a predator module that I did not know was installed in the truck, being an electrical tech with a tinkering mind I donated its body to science, and found that the entire assy was sealed in epoxy, so am sending it with a friend of mine who is a vet tech and have it x rayed in the morning so I will be able to see where to cut it open, but heres the thing, when I tryed measuring the resistance it acted like it was a diode, resistance would not hold steady. I did not apply voltage to it to see as I think I just found out what the 3 wires on the icp are for, now that I think I know whats ground , hot and pcm I can apply small ammount of volts and measure the resistance changes and map it . You may ask why destroy a predator, I want to see whats insdie, duplicate it, and then make it better. also be able to compare a 300 dollar module to a 99 cent resistor mod or 4 dollar diode mod. Thats all. My truck is my hobby I'm having a blast!

Thanks again in advance!

While output won't be equal to what you would get with a chip, it's a good simple and cheap mod for a little extra grunt. I run a diode in the sensor wire to help keep any potential gremlins at bay. As for resistance, I run a 0-15K pot with a 3.9K resistor in the ICP side of the circuit. (You just about run out of benefit at 3.9K and you can damage the ICP sensor). Looking at longevity, I've gone around 10000 miles since I made the mod, and stack it with my Edge tuner from time to time with no issues to date (I pay CLOSE attention to the pyrometer). When you wire it in, ground one side of the circuit and tie the other side into the output to PCM at the ICP. I think it's the middle of the three but I'm not sure. Break out the old multimeter, one should be a ground, one should be a 5 volt reference signal, and the third will be the output. If you don't have a pyrometer, I wouldn't attempt this mod.

in the last week or so I have made alot of leaps and bounds with the 10k mod, keep in mind that all of the modules out there are basicly 10k mods, they all connect to the icp which has a workable range and that is it. I have managed to "clone" my predator and you would be surprized where on the scale it is at.After seeing what they did I took it a little further, well alot further, In my dually I can smoke the snot out of the tires without powerbraking it, I found the edge that you can run this mod where the transmission does not want to shift and when it does it nails you. But before that point you can move the power up and down the rpm range but there is only one spot that will give hp from idle to redline with no rough idle, but it is very voilent. I am still in the testing mode and it is a dance with the devil since I have no pyro yet. I'm sure i'm on the edge of cooking something. I will post my findings as soon as I am sure of exactly what I got. But in the mean time this weekend I am going camping and I would love to use this mod to help pull my camper, can anyone suggest a SAFE level I shoud be able to tow with taking it easy no hard acceleration at 60 mph or so, the rv weighs 12,000lbs? Should I run a 18K, 12K or 10K? I thought I saw where someone else towed with a 10 k before. If you have done this mod please let me know what your towing and what you recommend. When I get back from vacation a pyro is the first thing on my list. Thanks again for all your help.

you better get a pyro in there first or youll be posting monday about needing to replace your turbo. or dont use it yet. just my :twocents: take it or leave it :thumb:

Don't use it while towing without a pyro. You would be surprised how quick those EGTs come up.
