alright im trying to learn all i can and have a few questions
i might be in the market for a 99-03crew cab dually or f250 cc swb.
it would be my daily driver which right now isnt much as i usually ride my bike, but i would also like to start doing some hot shot on the side, now i cant afford 2 trucks so would you recommend doing this with your daily driver as a part time job
also does has anyone done any hotshot with an f250? with say a 32' fifth wheel.

Welcome to the .org!!!

And I think you would be fine with an F250 with the "camper package" (basically adds an overload spring) and you would be good to go! :thumb: I don't think there is anything wrong with it being your daily driver either.

Welcome to the org! I ran hot shot with my truck for a while ( '02 F-350 SRW Crew Cab W/ 40 ft Big Tex gooseneck) my advice is to research who you want to lease on with & have money in the bank. You'll be an owner- operator, you'll have to cover ALL expenses!

you think being owner operator is hard to make money? i have a friend who just an operator and got an 07 cc dually to drive and doesnt pay anything which seems like the way to go, i was thinking about trying to get into it slowly, i know of a few places but being 20yr old not many companies would hire if any

You need a CDL, at 20 yoa you cannot cross state lines. When I was in it diesel was 1.50 a gallon, i was spending $1000 a month just in fuel, diesel is now 3.00 a gallon, you do the math. It was fun, I wish I could afford to do it again but expenses kill ya. I'm not saying not to do it, just really look at what you're gettin into and who you want to lease on to ( believe me, running your own authority is really expensive! ) I'll help you in any way I can

yea i was hoping to start off staying in texas (at least its a big state) so i could hold on to my current job, but didnt know about the state lines rule...do you know if many jobs are truck owner but not necessarily trailer or is it you either own it all or none

It varies, the company I was leased on to did both. Sometimes I would make a haul with my trailer, sometimes it would be just a single pallet, or a tow-away ( where I would pick-up a trailer, deliver it somewhere and bobtail back ). I delivered a trailer to Sacramento, CA and I bobtailed back to Texas. Yeah, if you are under 21 yoa you cannot cross state lines, but if you find the right company, with all the gas wells goin up on the Barnett Shale you can run all over North Texas haulin well equipment

I think as long as you have a PowerStroke you should be fine (havent pulled with the Duracrack)! Any model should pull what you want as long as you load it correctly on the trailer and know the FAW (front axle weight) and the RAW (rear) and if its just plain cargo all you need is to make sure you have your CG (center of gravity) right ( So all axles are equal) and the pulling is easy you let the trailer handle th load and you just drive. As far as Dailey drivers, these Diesels are made for it. Just becareful and look the truck over if you buy used . I.E. Airbox and sircleaner decals on the inside of hood and look at and smell your oil and tranny. Hope this helps, and by the way dont piss off any old truckers!
