Injectors - Fuel Economy?

I have a '02 F-350 4x4 CC SB PSD with about 110k miles. The truck averages roughly 16 - 17 mpg driving 750 miles a week on highway at 70 mph with the truck empty. What's the deal?

I'm wondering if worn injectors could cause the fuel economy to suffer? I don notice an intermittent engine tick at idle coming from the left rear... could that be an injector issue? Sounds kind of like a lifter colapsing, but it's intermittent.

Are there any aftermarket injectors that improve fuel economy... differnent tip / spray pattern?

Thanks :thumb:

If you are talking about the truck in your avatar, I wouldn't be complaining. 70 is pretty fast with that lift and those tires on an F350 to be wanting to get good mileage.

I bet if you slowed down to 65 you'd see a decent increase

Yeah...I get between 15 (about the worst) up to about 18 or 19mpg (about the best) in mixed driving at about 100 miles per day with a 2000 F350 with 37" tires and 6" of lift. Sounds about right to me. I usually get worse mileage on the freeway than I do "in town" I think it is because of the higher RPM's. Highway actually got better when I went form 35's to 37's.

Ummmm yea, if your talking about the truck in your sig..... no complaining! I get 15.5mpg if im lucky, mixed highway and city driving. Lifted 6" with 35's and 3.73 gears. I'd kill for a 17mpg "problem" like yours.

you should get about that out of your stock injectors if your oil and fuel filters get changed regularly.the ticking noise may be a rocker arm.ive seen the rocker ball get pushed up inside its self and become loose.

I'll pull the valve cover and check the rockers. Is the 7.3 a hydraulic roller valvetrain? Are the rockers adjustable or will I need to replace one if the ball is worn?

What is the easiset way to disable the engine from firing when I spin it over to check the rockers... disconnect the injector harness somewhere?
