ok, I am full of questions tonight.....
Since I am doing guage installs, and I will be able to adjust/monitor the boost, whats a safe level to get it to without really shortening the life of the stock turbo? Or will it not make a huge difference in the life? I will be making a boost fooler so that I can go above stock without making my SES light come on. But, I dont want to kill my turbo, nor the transmission. just bought it, dont wanna have to do 6k in upgrades by new years ya know?
Yeah you probobly won't boost more then 26-30 psi anyway with your mods. Keep it 30 and under just be responsible about it and don't slam the pedal to the floor all the time
A wastegate is very much like a coolant system thermostat. Up until a certain pressure the wastegate is closed. During that time it being closed helps the turbo reach a higher pressure faster. When it reaches a predetermined amount the wastegate opens and the excess exhaust that is not needed is routed through the wastegate and straight into the exhaust.
The wastegate actuator is simply a mechanical device that opens and closes the flapper on the wastegate to regulate boost. it receives its "signal" from MAP pressure fed to it via a small diameter hose, in this case "the red line."
A strong wastegate actuator will hold the wastegate flapper closed longer than normal...so comparing a stock actuator to a Banks Big Head. The actuator that is sprung higher will be able to hold the wastegate closed longer to assist the turbo to reach optimal boost without the wastegate blowing open from pressure and releasing too soon.
Sometimes me "DaBoostCreep" knows whats up. But I am of course still learning the diesel stuff. Turbos are truly a simple concept. Once you get it...you never forget it.
