Have a 2004 6.0...48,000 miles...last couple of days I've been unable to start it for no apperant reason after running around on errands. Has started both times after about a 30-60 min. wait. Batteries seem fine (still factory - I bought it late in 2004 model year) - engine cranks over like a champ - just won't start. Thinking it must be a sensor or solenoid issue somewhere...wondering if anyone else has run into this?
Obviously it's a fuel related problem. beyond that i don't knwo enough about these 6.0s to make an educated guess. Except next time it happens open the door and slowly cycle the key from off to run and listen for the hum of the fuel pump.
will give that a try - great idea...wondering if what ever it is - is storing a code...am going to try to get it over to the dealer today and see what they can find.
Jon, I have an 05 and I have had that issue since new, It has 5100 miles on it and had done it since 2k... I have had it to the dealer 4 times they installed a new cam sensor and wiring harness to the cam sensor, still not fixed and its random so usually they cannot duplicate it... today it was towed in and when they tried it, it started, i drove it home went out 1/2 hour l8r no start, moved wiring around still no start, grabbed deadblow hammer and smacked ECU 2 times and it fired up... No codes have ever been present... very frustrating It always starts after a bit of a waiting....
Where did you go to school to learn all that you know, or did you learn as you were growing up? I've been thinking about getting into the mechanic's field and I want to check out some schools and see if they're worth going to...
Wow, I didn't realize that you were that young. I'm 24 myself, turning 25 this february. I thought you to be around 30 something. I unfortunately grew up with a stepfather that knew how to do repair work, but had the money to pay someone else so he didn't bother. When he actually did do the work I never got to help, I was just in the way. Over the last several years though I have made many new friends and we're all gearheads and try to do all of our own maintenance and repairs. I've learned a lot from them and through some basic trial and error. I am pretty mechanically inclined, and that's why I have thought about going to a school. I'm not the kind of guy to just go to a school and get certified or whatever. I want to be at the top, I want my name to stand out above all others and I want to be the best at what I do, whatever it is.
Yeah that's the thing that scares me away from working for a dealer. I don't see how they can keep getting away with that. I mean say the book says it's supposed to take you 11 hours to do a certain job, but the engine has a lot of miles, some gunk buildup here and there, and bolts that are just a complete pain and don't wanna come loose.....and all sorts of other things that'll delay you....they don't take that into consideration? I would rather be paid hourly, or at least learn enough and get good enough to open up a small shop or something. Or just work on the big-rigs...

well threatening is great but even i dont deadblow my ecu . it doenst sound like fuel if its drives fine and if they did the cam sensor. if hitting ecu worked maybe the bad connection is in harness to ecu or if it was like the that from brand new possible bad ecu. bad connect at fuel pump
my best far away guesss
we all talk to our cars threaten the beepbeepbeepbeep out of it if you will
but dont beat its brains in :boldblue:
Jon, it's been several months since your post and I assume your issue is resolved. Still, I am curious as to the actual cause. I have an 05 with a September 04 build date. I had the same issue. Turned out to be a failed o-ring in the high pressure fuel pump. No problems since.
I would really like to if my 05 engine is any different than your 04 since they likely were built around the same time.

the 04 had two different build motors.....the early 04 is slightly different, and the late 04, 05, and 06 are for the most part the same. build date on the truck does not nessisarily tell you the build date of the motor, with 04's, but any 05 will be a late build motor. the easiest way to tell is to look at the front of the passanger side valve cover. if there is a sensor (ICP sensor.....injector controll pressure sensor) on the front of the passanger valve cover it is a late build, early builds are back by the exhuast y pipe, not visable without really looking for it.
if it is a no start after being run (reffered to as a no start after a hot soak) it is probably blown o-rings at the quick connect fitting at the high pressure oil pump. when they blow they will allow enough oil pressure to build when the oil is cold to start and run the engine, but after the oil is warm and has gone into its thinner state it does not seal well enough to build sufficient high pressure oil to run the injectors...so it is both fuel and oil related
Ive also had that problem only troube is I cant do it when I take my truck to the dealer. Anybody have any advice on getting the dealer to turn a wrench on my truck and not just hook it up to their computer?
explain to them that it is a no start intermitantly after a hot soak, and tell them to run oasis on it, there is a TSB or SSM on that exact condition....htats about all the advice i can really give....things vary from dealer to dealer.......Marc
buy battery disconnects. you will put them on both positive cables. when it will not be drivin for a few weeks, simply turn the knob on them and it will disconnect the batteries....only real way i know of to keep em from dying when they sit a long time........
So does that mean that you have to reset all your presets on the radio each time?
