Swapping Gauge Cluster Face

I've been knocking around the idea for a while now of putting an aftermarket gauge cluster overlay in the truck.

I actually need to replace my cluster soon due to some unrelated speedo issues, so I was thinking of picking up a used cluster and replacing the overlay/face when I swap it in.

I've read about two different ways of doing it, but I'm not sure which is the best?

Now of course, Option 1 seems like the easiest, but I've read some comments that if you do it that way some of gauges won't read right then. Also read some other comments that the only one you really have to worry about is the speedo, so you leave that needle off, leave the cover off, temporarily plug the cluster back in then go down the road at a constant speed and using a gps as an indicator, reinstall the speedo needle at the right speed.

Option 1 - Remove the cluster from the truck, pull the clear plastic cover, pull the needles, pull the gauge face, replace, reinstall all the needles, replace the cover, reinstall cluster.

Option 2 - Remove the clear cover, start the truck and let everything get up to operating temperature, mark the cluster somehow with the position of all the needles, turn the truck off, pull the cluster, pull all the needles, swap the face, plug the cluster back in, start the truck, let everything get to operating temperature, replace all the needles using your marks, shut the truck off, replace the clear cover, reinstall cluster.

Any information, thoughts, or experiences in doing this is appreciated.
