Just installed my Stancor 586; and when I parked the pickup I found a red fluid trail. Looked like someone shot her in the heart with an arrow.
The stock downpipe rubbed a hole in the fluid outlet line...
I couldn't find the part in fordparts.com (part# 7A031), but the wife is going to swing by the local Ford dealer and check, just to see, (it's right by the library, you know...).
Looks like I'm going to have to bend some tubing, 5/16" I believe.
On the glass-is-half-full side of the spectrum, it couldn't have happened in a better place -- right in front of the house.
Wife wasn't impressed with the Ford guy. He told her it's a "non-serviceable" part -- they don't make them anymore. She asked why and he got kind of snotty with her because it's a 14 year old vehicle. While she was there I found the Dorman part on-line and the Ford guy told her he'd be happy to order that for her but he'd have to mark it up. She had to go 'round with him to get him to tell her the mark-up was 40%.
Anyway, Car Quest didn't have any Dormans in any of their warehouses, so I'm going to try and splice it with an all brass ferrule fitting for now. Will advise...
Ferrule splice won't work. The hole in the line is too near the fitting -- no room to bend the tubing -- it'll run right into the downpipe. Maybe it'd work with an aftermarket dp, but not with the stock one.
Was told the Dorman line will have to come from Dorman. Would arrive the 18th -- the day we have to be 900 miles away, in the truck, with the camper.
I did, eventually, have that idea but the hole was right at the 90* bend and right at the downpipe. Figured the bend would kink the hose, and the exhaust temp might melt it. I do thank you for the thought.
OK, so got a 18" length of pre-flared 5/16" line. Car Quest bent it 90* at one end. Took it home, bolted the bent end into the trans, went down the line about 10", cut it, cut the trans line to match, then used the ferrule splice. For some reason one end of the splice is at a bit of an angle, but it's holding.
We may replace the line when I'm at the kid's for Christmas with the Dorman. I'm not sure it's necessary, but that'd be the time to do it. He can get it for about half what NAPA wanted.
I can't believe it lasted this long. The line was right on the sharp edge of the downpipe shielding. Crazy.
