Hope someone can help me out. Just bought a 99 PSD changed the air filter, oil and fuel filter. Ran great at start up got about a 3 miles fdown the road and it dies on me. let it sit for minute started back up and got it to a parking lot to have it towed. Thought maybe there was air in the lines from changing the fuel filter so I perged and refilled. next day ran fine all day. Day after that started to do the same thing again and now will start up sometimes run at idel anywhere from 10 sexonds to 45 minutes and then just shuts down. Checked high pressure oil reserve, and its getting oil. when it shuts off I can hear the fuel canister filling up. Scanned for codes, no codes. Please help.

Sounds like CPS (cam position sensor). Ford recently redesigned them and dropped the price to around $25. Get the part # ending in B: F7TZ-12K073-B

The 7.3s are notorious for this, it's probably their biggest quirk. They'll run perfectly, then just die. Sometimes they'll immediately restart, other times not. You might even get 2 and keep one in the truck. Many people do, although the new one is allegedly better than those in the past.

Also, don't let the dealer sell you the $100+ one, ending in A. The B is the same part. Speculation is Ford dropped the price to avoid having to recall the 7.3s for the problem...

Here's a great writeup on how to change it: Welcome to guzzle's CPS R&R Web Page

Thanks again. I forgot to ask in my post if there is any reason why the vaccumm solenoid would go out for the aut locking hubs. After I got out of the dealership parking lot the air kept on goin from reg to defrost. thought there might be a leak so itraced it to the solenoind that was letting all of the air out, so for the mean time I unhooked it and stopped up the hose so it would not burn up the vaccumm motor. Also sometimes the overdrive light will come on as soon as I start out and the speedometer will not work. If I turn off the truck and restart as long as it doesnt start flashing right away the speedometer works fine and the light doesn't come on. does this sound more like a sensor prob or a tranny? thanks

Sure thing!

Might just be a mileage thing on the vacuum hub issue. I'm not familiar with that problem. There are a lot of smart people on here; hopefully someone will chime in and help with that.

On the speedo/OD thing, does the ABS light come on too? There's an ABS sensor mounted on the rear differential that can fail, and cause most of what you're describing. I would suspect the sensor before a major tranny issue, if you're not seeing any other issues with it. Worst case, drop by a trans shop and see if they'll pull codes off of it for you, but I'd do the sensor first.

EDIT: Check this thread out: http://www.powerstroke.org/forum/99-03-7-3l-powerstroke-problems/15831-speedo-abs-problems.html

There's a speed sensor on the tranny (2WD) or transfer case (4x4). Sorry got the 2 mixed up. The ABS light can be caused by the differential sensor...

Thanks everyone for the replies. A new CPS got me goin again but still having some troucle. I have no power in truck, its embarrasing so say but my avalanche has more power right now then my PSD. Its shifting fine so it feels, but it almost seems its not running all cylinders, i had been hearing a what I first thought was a tick but then after getting up underneath found a leak in a pipe where it goes from the left header and connects into the other header. Could this be causing the prob, or should I start focusing on injectors. Any help would be greaty appreciated. thanks

does the truck SHAKE bad once you are up to speed? Does it idle real rough?

If it does...suspect a dead or DEAD cylinders. Have someone with a scan tool do a injector BUZZ test and a cylinder contribution test....to identify the faulty cylinder(s).........Most likely culprit of dead cylinders is injectors or injector o-ring leaks....but can also be cause by polished cylinder walls/worn rings.....pay attention to your blowby out the oil filler....is it steady? or does it have rythmic PUFFS...if it PUFFS...it could point to weak compresion / leaking rings on a cylinder.
