2001 powerstroke motor swap

Hey everyone,
New to the forums. I have a question on a motor swap i thought i would seek advice on. I have a 2001 powerstroke that the motor is dying on, and recently found a 2000 powerstroke that had been rolled. The engine had some water pump and intercooler damage, and only had 71,000 miles on it. My question is, will this year motor work in my truck?? If it does, does anyone think i shouldn't use it because of the rollover damage or pump/intercooler damage?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I dont see why the engine wouldent work in your truck. Iy should be a pretty strait forward swap. I would give the engine a very good look over for any additional damage and replace anything that looks suspect.

thanks for the advice.. i didn't know if the international motor was swappable with the other years.. i thought it was, but wanted to double check. Going to see the motor tonight, so i'll make sure to look at everything. The guy replaced the water pump and intercooler, but hasn't started it since the accident.

as far as i know the motor should be a direct bolt in, some other guys that know the facts will chime in sometime soon and let u know what is required to make that low miles motor work in your truck.
Good luck

To answer the question yes the engine will work. The years you need for an engine is 99-2002. Those years the engines were pretty much the same. The only thing that might make a difference is if the engine came out of a van. But other then that yes the engine will work. Now for the pump and intercooler damage. Well the intercooler damage happened when the truck rolled over so that should not cause any proplems besides you can use the intercooler you allready have. Water pump you will have to buy a new one and install it. I suggest you do that prior to installing the engine. So unless there is damage to the actual engine I don't see why you should not use it.

If it was me and the price was right I would use it.

My question to you is what is wrong with your engine.

Also take into consideration, if the oil pan is damaged you already have a good one unless your pan is damaged in some way. Turbo unless yours is damaged it will work on that engine, pretty much everything on your engine should bolt directly to that other one. Also the engine is a drop in plug in all the connectors, connect all the stuff that needs to be connected and start the engine up type swap. It is not like your swapping to a 6.0L or to a Cummins.

thanks for all the info guys. I bought my truck at a steal... 5500 but the motor has a dead cylinder... the guy before me let a friend borrow it and he got it back smoking blue. He wanted to get rid of it, so i couldn't pass up the deal. I thought maybe it was something with fuel, an injector was going bad and that's why it was smoking, but turns out the ring was bad on cylinder 7... i drove it like that for a week or so, but the miss on take off was too much and it was getting progressively worse, so i parked it.
Everything else on my motor works fine. I found this deal.. 2000 that had been rolled over.. he wants 2500 for the motor, which is a great deal, considering how much it would cost for a rebuild kit. I just wanted to make sure the motor would swap with mine. At 71,000 miles, i don't think i can let a deal like this pass up.

Ha, find out the build date. It could have forged rods:D

Make sure you drain it out real good and flush it as well. You never know what went where in a roll over. Crank it over and make sure it didn't hydraulic the cylinders and bend things when it went over. Just something to think about.

so, i went and checked it out today... everything looks good, i cranked it over by hand. (not really by hand, with a breaker bar...lol).... it turned over easy. Only question i have now is.. the truck with the good motor had a manuel transmission and mine is an automatic. I'm pretty sure that my flex plate will bolt up, but does it matter that the truck was a manuel (as in balancing wise?) were the 7.3's internally balanced? I got the whole deal for $2000 bucks. This guy who i bought it from pretty much needs the frame for his friend's truck, so i'm getting pretty much everything in and around the engine bay.

one more thing guys.....
the only thing i noticed was that the driver side valve cover, (way in the back cover towards the firewall) was bent in a little bit. Didn't look too bad to me, i'll change it anyways with my old valve cover...
Just wondering if it's anything to worry about???

Thanks for all you guys help so much. Everyone has been really helpful.

I know you would not be going through all this trouble if your engine was not bad but you dont here of many 7.3 ring failures.I guess you had the compression checked and thats how you know the rings were bad?Not second guessing you but I just want to know for my own knowlage. Thanks

I did a compression check on it.. but besides that, the massive blow by out of the fill tube in the engine also told me. Towards the end now, it's burning a lot of oil.. the whole thing on this engine, was the guy before me used to leave it idling for hours and hours at a time. He had a quick connect water hose fitting off of the motor to connect onto his construction equipment to warm them up in the cold winters.

Thanks for the interest though.
