how long at 1400deg?

I finally got a good load on my new turbo an I.C., and the egt's would get to 1400, an stay there for a couple of minutes(seemed like), when going up and down hills, or slowly climbing. It never went over that, but it was 75deg outside. What's it gonna be in August when it's 105? Who knows. So, how long can it handle that, and what will the result be? Does it just burn up the turbo? Thanks

im thinkin turbo problems as well as piston failure if the temps are too hight too long...i wish i could tell u the magic number and how long is safe but id keep it very brief anything over 1400 imop

id honestly be really scared of holding 1400 for longer than about 30 seconds on a 7.3....once wont probably hurt anything noticably..but if you do that very much...it will start to melt things.....

Just out of curiosity...what tune are you towing in?? i see your running Tony Wildman tunes...and just knowing his reputation..i wouldnt expect to see EGT's that hot on a tune of his....if it was meant for towing with....unless it was just time for you to grab a gear and you didnt....

It was 50deg cooler with the tow tune, but would still hit close to 1400 at times. If I backed off at 1250, I'd never get anywhere. It'll hit that coasting down a hill(not really, but close). Any touch of the throttle and it's straight to 1200+. It just didn't want to make much boost in the lower chip settings, and had noticeably less power. It seems to take a TON of fuel to get the TN to build boost. I was at 75mph, 2300rpm, 27-30psi, so there was no other gear. It would also get that high if I slowed down to around 60, about 1800rpm. I can't downshift at that point, and it doesn't want get over 15psi, and is chuggin smoke. I'll email Tony, he can probably adjust my tunes to help out, but if he takes fuel out, I'll lose power, and that sucks. I guess I really don't have a choice, or I can get water, but then again, that's why I got the I.C. in the first place. Thanks

id actually be curious to see what your ICP was....its possible your HPOP is getting a bit weak and the fuel isnt atomizing....not even a hunch but at least another possiblity to throw out there...

214K miles, I wouldn't doubt it. I thought of that. I have about 1/2 pedal travel before I can feel the power flatten out, and I read somewhere that that had to do with losing hpop pressure. I need to get it tested. Can they do that at the dealership? thanks for the idea

At that kind of temperature, it's not going to last too long. I'm concerned as to why the EGTs stay up going downhill. Maybe an exhaust restriction? I'd also look at a water injection to keep the EGTs down. 1400 degrees will start piston scoring and take the temper out of the rings.

I wonder if you can check your pyro - maybe the gauge isn't reading properly? Gauges can go bad. :twocents:

1400 deg???!!! DANG!!! I get scared when I get over 600 deg F. (Mine is Post Turbo though). I look at it like this, if I see the EGT climbing steadily, in 5th gear, up a hill, I'm shifting into 4th and slowing down a little...motors are too expencive for me to be running 1400 deg EGT.

I could slow down, but that wouldn't help. I'd have to slow down to 55 to be able to drop a gear, and if I get down around 60-65 (in 6th), the turbo won't make any boost, and the temps start climbing. I know 1400 is death, but I had to drive normal(once), just to see what happened. It kinda p*sses me off, since I spent a significant amount of $$, and It's worse than stock. As far as I can tell, new I.C.'s are worthless. Now, if you're making 40psi, 500hp, maybe, I don't know. But this turbo won't get over 15psi going 65 mph, so how much can that big i.c. do? Not much.

I went out again today, with a smaller load, and I think I understand the problem. The turbo will not gain boost if the rpms aren't climbing, no matter how much fuel it's getting. I know that's an obvious statement, but this turbo flattens out really low. Therefore, if I'm loaded, climbing a hill, and my speed is either staying the same, or decreasing, the more throttle I give it, the more fuel it gets, the higher the egt's get, but the boost stays the same, or drops if I slow down enough.

I planned on getting the new BB TN, but now I don't know. It may spool faster, but will it level off at the same point. If so, it won't matter, it would just hit the wall quicker. Will a 1.0 housing make more boost, or does it only matter at really high rpms? I was thinking of getting a 1.0 on the BB. sorry for the essay. thanks

Is your truck a Manual or Auto. If it's a manual...all you have to do is slow down and drop down a gear while on a grade. The RPMs will jump and boost will go up a little...you might have to give it more peddle....Tada...lower EGTs and better pulling power up the grade. I would NOT tow that much weight on anything other than a TOW/HAUL tune. If you have to drop to 45mph to make it up the grade, that's what you have to do. You can't expect to run up hills at 90 mph with 10K#'s and not have your EGT's going through the roof.

For whatever its worth..heres from my own experience. I have an 03 E550 that tips the scales at 13,400 EMPTY. I bought it may 10 of last year and while I had a lot of problems with it..most because Allegheny Ford didn't know their a** from a hole in the ground. Unknown to me when I bought it, it had an old "van Akien" chip with some unknown program. I drove this beastie some 60,000 miles before discovering the chip, and installing a set of guages. . After a new PCM (which I didn't need) was installed, just for schyts and giggles, I plugged in the old chip. A bit more power, a bit less MPG and the EGTS would hit 14-1500 in a heartbeat! Especially climbing a grade. Scared..I quickly pulled that sucka. But heres the gist...I put almost 60k miles, often loaded heavy, and pulling some pretty good grades..long grades, and with the chip in there it would undoubtedly hit those high temps (ignorance really IS bliss..LOL) but there has been no apparent damage. I'm now running Jody's tunes on that same chip (40/60 tow and 80 econ) and not only does the ol gal run better, the EGTs are actually on average 50-70 degrees cooler than stock.. Granted, about the longest I ever had the really high temps in a sustained setting was perhaps 15 minutes. There is a long, rather steep grade on I-77 north bound from NC into Va and I had to climb that one several times. Maybe I just had the Almighty Diesel God looking out for my Beastie, but it didn't seem to harm anything.

It's a manual, but I refuse to slow down and drop a gear. Yes, that would work, but if I have to do that, I might as well have a completely stock truck. The whole reason for my mods is so that I can tow anything I want and not have drop gears at every hill. I agree not to tow in anything but a tow tune, I was trying everything, since it was the first real load I'd had on it. Hopefully the new turbo will help. So I guess everybody can wave as you pass me on the hills for the next month or so till that new turbo comes out. I'll be in the depressed guy in the white dually going 30.
