I am looking to get a loaded Excursion in the next few months. I am kicking around the options to either buy a 7.3L and just mod the suspension and other superficial things or buy a 6.0L and immediately EGR delete and do the studs.
Questions: What is the price of doing the EGR delete and Studs.
How bullet proof will this make the motor?
Will this make it more reliable or as reliable as the 7.3L?
Will this motor give me better fuel economy then the 7.3L?
What are the chances of finding a used (80 - 125K mile) Ex with this mod already done?
chances are slim that you will find one with all the work done already... i would opt to get a 7.3L and put some of that money for a built transmision... after that you should be good to go.... mines curently for sale but prob more of a lift than you want..
Thanks man, I live in South Florida. Looking to get a 8" lift at most on some 33 - 37's. I am looking for a decent looking black Ex that isn't beat to heck with an absurd price tag. I'm starting to loose faith, but I'll keep looking.
I searched and simply read threads upon threads here and on other sites to make my choice on an Ex. There are many compelling reasons for a person to go with either engine and they all have merit...well most of them. You gotta watch out for some forums they have a pretty rampant "6.0 HATE", they aren't of much help unless you want a reason to buy a 7.3 (they will give you millions!). So do your homework and make "your" own decision based on your feelings.
With that said I bought an 05 Ex with a 6.0, knowing I can do most of the work myself and save some money from paying a shop to do the work. I test drove a few and took an Edge Insight with me. I ended up talking the owner down 4k from his asking price after getting a couple injector codes and a bad O2 sensor! We both knew what is was gonna cost at the ford dealership to get fixed but I knew what it was gonna cost me to do myself! I tell everybody I see that I stole that Ex!!!
So my list of things to do are
EGR delete
8-injectors (I was just gonna do 2 but did some more homework)
SCT tuner w/custom tunes
FICM flash by PHP
next year i will get the studs done
I think the people with the 6.0 kind of think they have gold and ask prices that aren't realistic. I'm not worried about spending money, I just want to get my worth if you know what I'm saying.
As I stated in my last post
"do your homework and make "your" own decision based on your feelings".
I cannot answer the question for you, I can only give you my opinion which I have. There are tons of 6.0 vs 7.3 threads out there, you just have to find them and decide. Both engine/trans combos have their strengths and weaknesses.
When you come for a test drive with a code reader and get a few DTC codes before you drive the thing, most sellers will be willing to deal! You just have to know how much it costs to fix them. Drive lots of them you will know the studs from the duds pretty quick.
I just finished replacing all of my injectors. Didn't know you should do all of them at the same time (Similar to spark plugs). I had three go bad a couple of months ago. this weekend, I had 4 go bad. (one of the three replaced before). I wish that I had all of them done together originally. I have not done the studs, but have had to replace other items. My 04 EX limited with 6.0 has over 180K and runs strong when it is running, but I have had to have it towed four times in the last 6 months. don't think that I am downing the 6.0, I do like it and it does get pretty decent mileage. about 17.0 around town, which is mostely backroads with cruise control on. Haven't been able to pull my 30 foot Travel Trailer any distance to measure mileage with it.
Like Tuckman said, research, learn, decide, trust your feelings.
