Dare I say...one more question??(naaa ain't ever gonna happen) Depending on what I can learn from my esteemed fellow 'strokers in their infinate wisdom and knowledge I will be guided in my quest to seek power and (maybe not) fame for my most humble E550 Beastie. I'm gonna be getting a chip from Jody...thinking about 3 pos...40/60tow, 80econ. However...the problem I think I'll be having is one of high EGTs. There was an old chip in the truck when I bought it last year(unknown to me at the time) and after installing the guages I reinstalled it (after Allegheny Ford found it and sold me a new pcm...which I didn't need) anyway..to make a short story into a lengthy novel, while it did seem to increase the power, my mileage went down about 10% (of course that was loaded to 19040lbs and before I plugged the drain line on a leaky fuel drain) but that aside...my EGTs would hit into the 1400's when pulling a steep grade or just pushing it hard. Average driving..ie "straight and level" she'd hover around 800-1000. Mind you, I drove this Beastie for almost a year, without guages and oblivious as to either the presence of the chip or the elevated EGTs and as far as I can tell, she suffered no ill effects. Also consider that I'm not inclined to be "heavy-footed" and on the freeway, usually keep her to around 63..even when the speed limit is higher. I drive for a living and the fuel costs come out of my pocket so I usually opt for better economy, and 63 seems about optimum. Also looking into possibly, when (if) free funds become available, of swapping the existing 4:88 gearing to something like 4:11. I drive an average of about 55 to 60k miles a year, and at nearly 3 bucks a gallon, I don't think it would take long to recoup the costs involved. But..back to the prime concern..EGTs. The high temps (along with the consistant SES and P1211 code) scared me so I promptly pulled the old chip, but I really miss the added power (I was passed by an old lady in a wheelchair the other day...quite embarrassing..especially as she flipped me off for going so slowly..LOL) The longest I expect to see these kind of temps is maybe 10-15 minutes while climbing grades..is there a cheap, DYI method of lowering them to a bit less frightening level? Mind you this is an E series...ergo, an aftermarket intake and/or 4" exhaust won't fit, and I can't seem find anyone anywhere able to fabricate one (or the other). Your help, assistance and guidence here would be a great help...Thanks guys
Howard.
I am sure with some thought you could come up with your own DIY tymar intake that will fit under your hood. For your exhaust you want it to flow freely. If you can't go 4inch at least make your stock exhaust straightpipe. This will lower your egt's a little bit. But when you start hitting 1200-1300 degrees on your pyro you better let off the throttle a bit and bring them egt's back down to around 1,000 degrees. You can run constant at 1200 but I would not run over that at all. So you may just have to take those inclines a little slower. Another thing you maybe able to do is run a 4inch exhuast from the downpipe back. Leaving your stock downpipe in place this will also help your egt's come down a bit. Other then that any other ways will cost money. You could look into a water/meth injection system but then your talking money which by your statements you don't really have to spend.
As for changing your gear ratio, if you don't have big tires on your E-series then why you running 4.88's I would replace them with 4.10's or 4.08's maybe even 3.73's. All depends on how much towing you are doing. I have 3.73's in my truck from the factory and I do quite well towing and hauling stuff. At about 70mph I am running at 2,300 rpms and at about 800 degrees egt's.
DIY Tymar intake is your own personal version of the Tymar intake.
The Tymar intake uses filter 6637 from fleet filters. The filter costs around 40 bucks shipped. Then you get a piece of 4 inch pvc pipe or abs pipe. A few 4 inch hoseclamps and make up your own tymar intake using your stock intake tube. Or you can fab up your own intake tube. Works just as good as the Tymar intake kit but costs less then the real Tymar intake kit.
air box...ok...let me put it this way...when you lift the hood of an E series, theres just enough room to spit once and utter 4 cuss words. The stock "air box" comes over the fan shroud, and then over the radiator..thats it..no room like on a pickup. To make room I'd have to a/ relocate the coolant overflow tank, b, relocate the main battery and c, a few other odds and ends. No kidding, theres NO room! Same goes with the turbo back, I can't find ANYONE who either has them, or can fabricate one from 4" tubing. I even thought, brieftly, about a dual intake, but again, there's no room to bring it around the engine/radiator etc and into what could be laughingly called the "unused" grill area. As for the exhaust system, I was, again brieftly, thinking of putting a Y type "splitter" on the existing down pipe and going dual 3 1/3" pipes with straight thru mufflers, but someone here nixed that idea saying my back pressure would go thru the roof. So...I'm kinda stuck between that "rock and a Hard spot"
Shoot I told you I would ask about that down pipe... I'll call him right now!
