hey guys i jsut got a 97 f250 powerstroke and i am looking at gettin a tuner for her but i was wondering what you guys would recomend im not looking to spent a crazy amount of money but i was looking at this one and wondering what you think and i also have a 4 inch exhaust to go on her and a open K N N filter to remove the air box.
sry im new to the electronic diesels but what else would you recomend with using this chip i will be upgrading to a 6 liter intercooler but wont be for a while have any other ideas im open to options
Get yourself some gauges first. At the very least an egt gauge to monitor the temps as they will get hotter with a chip or tuner. If you have an automatic get a trans temp gauge and a boost gauge is nice too. If I was you talk to the vendors here on the site they will hook you up with everything you need with the service to back it up.
yah i had planed on gettin a trans temp guage and a boost not so much the egt guage but i will check it out i wont have the truck on the road for a few months so im jsut going to sink money into it till i get it the way i want but how exactly does the trans temp guage hook up i realize i will have to buy a temp sensor to go with the guage but where would i put in in the trans too and also how much boost does a stock 7.3 run
In my opinion if your going to chip or tune up the truck and egt gauge is pretty much mandatory. You really need to know how hot your exhaust gas temps are so you dont torpedo your turbo or engine for that matter. I think its more important than the boost gauge. The boost on a stock truck will be 15-20 psi with it chipped you might see 30. I have got 28 with mine. Here is a pic for the 4r100 not sure if yours has the same pressure port.3-Gauge Install Pictures
you stated that you have a four inch exhaust waiting to go on....is it a turbo back? If you have not switched out the downpipe, I highly suggest that you do so, especially since you have a 97. You will have to smash the pinch weld on the firewall but it will really help the truck breath. This is crucial, especially if you are planning on running a chip or tuner.
on the OBS old body style trucks, we have to bend the pinch weld on the fire wall. On the stock downpipe it flattens itself, the new downpipe you have should be a two piece downpipe. The easiest way to get the old one out it cut it with a sawzall, bend the pinch weld with a porta power, and then bolt the new one up.
I would suggest staying away from the k&n filter with a turbo diesel engine, tends to let too much by the filter. Check out a tymar intake instead. And listen to TheBAT about the downpipe. Not only will it lower egts, help with spool up, but it also adds an aggressive tone to the exhaust. Good luck with it. Also when you get a few more basic mods done check into a TWildman chip, IMO the best out there. If you don't want to wait to get the chip than get one anyways, you won't be dissapointed with Wildman tuning.
I agree with stroked about the K&N, and the wildman chip. I dropped my K&N a couple of months ago for a 6637, and it flows and cleans better; I'm real happy with my wildman chip, and for the obs guys, he seems to be one of the best. totaldieselperformance.com
Try a Tony Wildman Chip at www.totaldieselperformance.com And Try to look up a Tymar Air Filter Kit. Its Pretty much DIY Like the rest of diesel performance parts Ive got a 5" Exhaust on my 97 Sounds Deep!
thanks for the help guys i am hoping to get some stuff together in the next few weeks and start at her i was wondering if you had any pics or a link to where someone installed a 4 inch exhaust on a old body style one and just currious about the firewall i want it to look tidy so just wondering what ppl do or weather i will haul out the dash and notch out the firewall an make it look clean
thanks matt
