TW chip install??

I have read where some people clean the connectors on the PCM enough to see copper and some say not to clean until you see copper. What are you supposed to do?

I am installing my TW chip and have a few of the connectors starting to show copper - there was a ton of the wax or what ever it is material covering the connectors. I am afraid I am cleaning too much and will ruin the PCM. Is it alright for a few of them to have some copper showing through??

I thought there was a chip install tech file but I can't find it - or just over looking it.

Thanks for any help.

I cleaned mine with some adhesive remover to get the gunk off. Then used a brass brush because it will clean the contacts off to get them nice and shiny, but not remove any material.

IF you see copper then you've removed the silver solder. If you are capable I would re-tin the contacts, but MAKE SURE you don't get sloppy and connect any of the contact strips. The copper can tarnish over time, causing the PCM to lose connections with the chip.

Well,
I have the chip in and position #2 which is Daily seems to have problems. It died while in this position and has thrown a CEL. It also surges real bad and shifts very funny.

All other postions are working great. I really don't think that I took enough of the tinning off of the contacts to hurt anything. I was very careful and even stopped to come and post for a few opinions on this - thanks by the way - if I did by chance take too much off the contacts could only one position be affected or would all of them have issues?

Thanks for any suggestions.

This morning I pulled the PCM again and started all over.

I cleaned the PCM contacts with some rubbing alcohol and had 2 other people inspect the contacts to make sure I was clean of any waxy residue and to inspect the amount of copper showing on my contacts. All three of us agreed that is was as clean as it possibly can get and the copper showing was very minimal. They both were expecting to see a lot of copper when I was explaining to them what to look for but it is really only showing in two spots in the corner of one of the contacts - I don't think it is a problem.

I installed the PCM with the chip and buttoned everything back up and it still runs the same. Every position runs great and I really like everything except the #2 Daily position - it dies (Motor cuts off) every time I try to use it with in 500 ft. of take off.

All other positions run fine. I ran it all over town and on the highway at all speeds - I can't get the other positions to even hesitate.

Besides the #2 problem I really love the chip it makes a huge improvement and it is really fun to drive around. I just hate it when things don’t go right.

I cleaned mine with a soft sponge and some rubbing alcohol. I took it all the way down to where the golden color of the connectors was just faintly showing. Not enough to get it to shine but just enough

I'd give Tony a call, might be a glitch in the program.
