Hi all. I've a 2003 F350 Super Duty with the 6.0 liter powerstroke engine. When I bought this truck, there was a very mild squeek squeek squeek sound when the engine was running at idle. Now that sound has evolved into a non-stop squeek that becomes quite audible and obvious at higher revs. The only problem I've had recently was to replace the alternator at 112,000 km. or about 70,000 miles. Any idea what may be causing this metallic squeeky "grinding" sound? Could a bearing be going? Anyone have a similar experience? Thanks.
if you can pop the belt off and spin the idlers, tensioner, p/s pump a/c comp ect and see if you can make the noise happen again, if nothing can be found, start it up with the belt off and see if the noise is gone. this will atleast pinpoint it the the accessory drive or other systems.
I can certainly see how removing the belt from those accessories would determine if the problem originates with one, or the motor itself. Other than general repair tools (sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers) would I need any specialty tool(s) to remove the belt? This is my first diesel, so I don't have specialty tools for it. Thanks.
There is a little trick you can use. First pay attention to how the belt is routed around all the pullys. There is a little label with a routeing chart but it may be missing.
There is a little locking tab on the bottom of the idler assembly, it is only sheet metal so sometimes it breaks off. With a good light look down and see if it is there or snake your arm down from the Passenger side and fell for it, it is a tight fit you will probably loose a little skin.
Now with engine off from the passenger side grab the belt about half way down and pull out as far as you can and then slowly release and the latch should catch. The belt will just barely be loose but it will slide off the pully.
Thanks guys....Dannyboy, once you place the belt back on the pulleys, do you do the same procedure as when taking it off, or do I need to do something different? In other words, how do I get the belt back on the pulleys so it stays on? Thanks.
Pretty much the same give it a yank out and it should unlatch and tighten back up.
