Hey guys. I have been more of a lurker on here since I joined when I bought my truck. I have owned several Cobras and a 90 TT Fox that has turned into a track car. I needed a truck to pull it, so of course I went overkill. I picked up a 2002 F-450 C-C a few months ago. Really excited about it. Got the parts on the way for the lift and already got the bed ready to cut up to fit the bed to the truck. Then off to paint. Tons of good info on here, Look forward to hanging out and learning.

jwindbigler, No i have not. Are you saying this should be my first step? All my cars i have always used SCT Custom tunes from a place in Baton Rough Called Stang-Hi Performance. Cody straps it to the dyno and custom tunes them with a MPG tune,2 street tunes using pump gas (low bost and high bost) and a race gas tune (just high boost). Are you suggesting just an over the counter unit if so what one?

chvyrkr81, Thanks for the link, im heading over now to look around.

Stay with the SCT. That is what everyone on here recommends. It sounds like you already have the hookup with the tunes that you are going to want anyway. The 4 tunes that you described are exactly what you are going to want. One for MPG, on for Towing, and one for Performance. If your buddy cody can tune the SCT for your powerstroke, then I would let him do it!

Wes, do not under an circumstances fall for the Edge/SCT koolaid when it comes to a 7.3. The off the shelf tunes that come with those will start a slow death for your truck.

First mod should probably be a set of gauges honestly. Installing gauges first has the added benifit of showing you just how the truck reacts to the new tunes.

Intake would be the other thing I'd address ASAP, the stock intake doesn't filter very well. Few people I know have dusted engines courtesy of the stock intake.

Exhaust mods, depending on your ultimate HP goal, are pretty simple. Just removing the muffler will open it up enought to keep EGT's down as long as you're runnin stock injectors.

Did you get an auto or 6 speed?

chvyrkr81, So this opens up several question for me. So if not EDGE or SCT what? go custom? I do want the guages and will add them, but was going to use a heads up display with replay so if i get a code or something happins i can go back a look. In racing we call it data logging. Im guessing its the same. Typically i have used SCT with custome tunes, and data loging. But keep in mind im talking cars. So please, school me.

When you say intake, i dont think we are talking about the same thing. Im thinking intake, as in top of the block between the two heads. Im guessing your talking about the air intake tube and box. Considering its a turbo setup, are we talking about a whole cold side kit? i did make a small improvement. I heard it sucking when i got it, almost like the turbo was trying its *** off to spool but coming in late. I swaped to a open weave filter and cut that hole in the plastic behind the grill to allow more flow. I know you guys have a high speen name for the "mod" but i dont remember it. It did the trick, Cut spool responce. This is a temp fix, it will see a full cold side kit with hot side and exhuast.

The truck is an auto. Man im from the country, my girl rides in the middle. :)

Thanks for the info, ill take all i can get.

Yes go with a custom tuned chip. FWIW, on a stock injectored truck, nothing in my personal experience outruns/outperforms PHP. I haven't run his tunes on moddified injectors, but I'm sure he's just as good there.

With custom tunes however, comes PCM fooling that makes electronic gauges inaccurate for some things. I do run a data log compatible scan gauge, but I don't use it for boost or EGT's. Can't beat analog gauges for that. However, runnin two analogs, plus a scan gauge would allow you to monitor trans temp with the scan gauge without buyin another analog.

Check out Terminator Engineering for the scan gauge. Can't remember the name of the company that makes 'em. I like mine, but for serious datalogging/troubleshooting I use a laptop.

And yes, by intake I mean the cold side, filter to turbo. Best bang for the buck there is some triming of the factory airbox, and using a S46637 open element filter from Napa. Sometimes called a "Tymar" intake. You'll need a section of 4" pipe to complete the duct. The other mod you did is called a "zoodad" mod. After the screen name of the first guy to post a write up on it.

Depending on how heavy and how often you plan to tow, a valve body from BTS and one of the PI Stallions they sell will make the trans like you alot better, and will improve every aspect of trans performance.

HAHAHAHA, Come to my house. I live 60% of the year in Africa. When we go home, there is a pile of boxes in the garage. My girl is always like, "whats this stuff" i just shrug my shoulders and start opening. She goes inside and opens bills. (this is when it all goes bad!) Tons of parts and no bills. How many guys do you know that honestly has an offshore account that funds big boy toys. One day she will talk me into getting married, then im screwed!
