hey guys, I think i overheated my turbo yesterday. I was pulling about 25k and my egts are normally 1000 to 1200 consistent when pulling any considerable weight. not long after i started my turbo locked up. it has done it once before and i just freed it up with a screw driver, did the same thing this time. now my boost has been cut in half and the drivability sucks. My question is what is a normal egt when hualing heavy, and what are somethings to do to get it down. already have banks comp wheel and 4in turboback exh. my chip is tw 6 pos with tow and heavy tow.
Before i got my 1.0 Exhaust housing i ran a consistant 1150-1250 temps. On long grades id touch 1300+ but just for very very short periods of time. When i ditched the .84 housing im running at about 950-1100 towing 27K combined truck/trailer.
yep just quit spinning. had to pull off and free it up. sounds crazy don't it?
Redline, you said you got a 1.0 exhuast housing, is that the banks outlet that deletes the ebpv flap? also what kind of boost numbers r you getting in tow mode. I have also had some problem with my chip that i was wondering if anyone else has experienced, I have a tony wildman chip with his regular tow setting and heavy tow. The standard tow setting has no power on my truck, its like being is stock but i like the way the trans shifts. the heavy tow has good power but its like the trans is lock in low range or something and when it shifts out of second it shutters bad if your not in it. if you just take off easy it shutters. i get about 20 psi in heavy tow and only 8 to 10 in tow.
my 1.0 housing is the actual turbine housing, not the outlet. It utilizes the stock outlet. I hit 30lbs with no problems with my BTS chip set on #6. I currently have a broken EBPV thats totally non functional, its still there just swings like a porch swing. IN the stock trim i can get 15lbs towing that kinda load, granted it works it REALLY hard to where its hard to maintain 60mph in O/D almost impossible on the flatlands.
Now the shudder your getting could be a tel-tale sign of something pretty serious if it only shudders when its in full lock which i LOVE by the way it sounds like a torque converter problem, it could also be your carrier bearing on the two piece driveshaft
Ive heard alot of good things about TW chips so its hard to think it could be programming, those boost numbers are REALLY low even on total stock tuning id start looking for exhaust leaks(up-pipe gaskets are notorious for failing, get yourself a set of bellowed up-pipes from a international dealer and never another exhaust leak worry for the life of the engine) before you throw a new turbo on it ive never heard of a compressor seizing up and bein knocked loose with a screwdriver and ever going another mile, let alone actually produce anything useful as far as drive pressure.
I strictly tow with my PSD so any kinda expierience questions towing ill be glad to answer the best i can and hope i didnt confuse you any farther with my post
having towed heavy with both, the 1.0 hands down. Minimal lag increase compared to my .84 but makes me able to use my whole motor pulling a large grade instead of 1/2 of it:woot:
As redline73 said in his first post, I was told when I had my gauges installed that I could run up to 1250* (Pre-turbo) consistently without damage. Could go above that for short bursts.
Sounds like something (bearings maybe :dunno: ) in your turbo was wearing out and this just caused it to fail. If you take it off, you might want to check the oil passages to see if you are getting good oil flow.
