egr delete advice needed!!

So today my truck started to stumble and almost quit when i let of the throttle and then step on it again. The check engine light came on so I stopped at the local garage and had them scan it. Big surprise it's the egr valve again!!! The dealer replaced it when it was under warranty so the local shop told me to see if they would warranty it. The local shop thought there was a requirement to warranty emission parts for 8yrs 80,000 miles but the dealer says no. I asked the dealer if he had ever done a egr delete. He said they dont do them and that some of there customers had done them to the trucks and had problems afterwards. Are there any potential problems that a egr delete can cause?or does the dealer just want to keep slapping a new one in everytime it gets plugged up? Is it good to delete the egr cooler to? The local shop is willing to do the install. They have worked on all my vehicles for well over 20 yrs and are very good mechanics although they arent really a Diesel shop. If I provide the kit they will install it and still put a inspection sticker on it without this emmision junk.Is one kit any better than another? I would prefer the simplest route to make this truck reliable. I know this is alot of questions but any advice anyone can offer would be most appreciated !

I have to agree. The dealer just wants the business. My 06 EGR went bad and I replaced it in a parking lot. When it went bad again I decided to have a diesel shop do the full delete. It definitely runs better. I had to get a SCT to get rid of the codes. My local shop handled everything. Its worth the money. He tells me that this mod should cure all the problems on a "stock" 6 liter. One thing though, my mileage hasn't improved. Also I took my truck to a smog shop just to see if it would pass. It did on all levels except the visual. My cat was removed when I put a new exhaust on it.

The full EGR delete is the way to go...FCDP and GOGO diesel make good kits as well as others...Your dealer is yankin ur chain man...

The EGR system is one of the big weak links on this truck...you also have the TTY headbolts that stretch and if you dont have the new one piece STC fitting than you might wanna get that changed as well because if it fails it will leave you sitting on the side of the road.

If you have anything above 04.5 I believe...you need the SCT tuner so you can delete the check engine light...prior 04.5 the light doesnt come on...

Also make sure your state isnt doing smog checks yet...here in Cali its already started although I havent had to do mine yet...

Good luck on your decision

Avoid dealers at all costs, they are there to take your money. EGR delete is money well spent!! Your oil will be much cleaner as well. I got the RCD delete and love it :thumb:

I had my mechanic do the Full EGR Delete as detailed here in the forum under 6.0 Mod Help catagory.

My truck now runs cleaner (less black smoke under hard acceleration), gets better mileage and I beleive is ultimately happier engine.

I had 3 Ford Service shops around where I live now tell me the best thing to do with these engines is to delete the EGR system.

Do the EGR delete. Get rid of all that junk.

the truck is a 04 but has 03 build date so from what Im hearing the check engine light wont be effected . Im pretty much convinced that a egr and egr cooler delete is the way to go but Im not so sure that this my current problem .I posted this same thread in the 6.0 motor problems section too if any on has any suggestions theres more info there

hey redsox I'm in upstate NY too, where are you getting this done, im interested in this aswell how much is it going to cost?

Search Ebay for the RCD kit and you can get it for $250. I have been working on putting that same kit in my 04 X tonight. I have everything broke down, in the morning I will eliminate the EGR cooler, install the new oil cooler and hopefully things go well. This is my first diesel, and the first time I have dug into it. Anyone that can turn a wrench and follow some directions can do this job themselves. :thumb:

Also doing the CCV mod and Intake boots from Dieselsite.

I also would like to know about this.

I am since that is the original reason that I am doing this. My EOT and ECT were spread beyond 15 degees and it was startint to get worse as the weather continues to warm. I wanted to do studs and everything at once, but cash flow in does not permit that right now. I have several .pdf write ups that cover this maintenance, pm me if you want them. They are pretty straight forward. Some things just require a little more patience than others.:hehe:

does deleting the egr and egr cooler increase the life of the oil cooler? my oil cooler was replaced under warranty with the egr cooler. I know that with everything apart to do the delete its easier to replace the oil cooler then but I sure hope mine is still good the truck only has 65000 miles!

I bought an oil cooler rebuild kit from ebay, came with directions and everything you need, except the screen. The screen costs $16 from ford, you difinately want to replace this, as mine was broken. I got my oil cooler kit for about $200. If you are doing a cooler with the delete, it is a little bit more work, but well worth it. I finished mine up tonight and it runs great!:woot:

It is not necessary. It depends on your situation. Are you having problems with your EOT and ECT spread? Or do you just want to go a little further and change the cooler out for peace of mind. For me, my spread was over 15 degrees F so I needed to do the cooler, and did a delete while I was at it. I noticed that as it got warmer, the spread started to grow.

If the situation was reversed and I just wanted to do the delete, I would probably spend the extra $200 on the rebuild kit and change it out for peace of mind. This way you know you should not have any problems. Just my G-2.

Anyone else want to chime in on this. It is my understanding that the 2 piece stc fittings were only installed on 2004.5 and up models. The older ones had a 1 piece, which they switched back to. This is from what I have read and not from experience. Can anyone else confirm or deny this???:dunno:

If they replaced you hpop under warranty and it was semi recently then you more than likely have the updated sct fitting..if you hpop ir sct fitting goes out and you take it to ford...all they have is the new ones now...they won't put an old one back on

Do you have any gauges that let you monitor EOT and ECT? If so, what is the spread between the two. Before I did my oil cooler, I had spreads as high as 18-20, and that is when I stopped driving it. Now that it is changed out, in town almost the same temps within a couple of degrees, at 70 mph a 7 degree difference max. I don't think there is any way of knowing which version of the stc fitting you have without pulling it apart. Hope this helps.

I dont no what EOT and ECT are ? If you mean aftermarket gauges then no its totally stock.
ECT=Engine Coolant Temp (usually at 190-195 normal op temp).
EOT=Engine Oil Temp (usually at 195-200 normal op temp).

My uncle just had a cooler fail on him on his 07 F350. Dealer replaced engine under warranty which is no surprise. But the excuse they told my uncle why the cooler failed. The oil filter! Told him by not running standard motocraft oil filter it blew his cooler up. Either they were telling my uncle a complete lie. Or the tech is really just that stupid!

Oh, my 04 with 171K on it no cooler issues yet. Have the delete that was featured in diesel power mag. Waiting for some free time to install.
