2001 7.3 powerstroke, after filling truck up at gas station service engine soon light came on and engine began to have a rough idle and loss of power. the problem started about 2 miles from the gas station. had the truck scanned at autozone and no codes came up. when i got in the truck this morning the light was out and the engine idled smooth, i drove around the block and as soon as it reached normal running temp the ses light came back on. it appears at this point the problem only happens when the truck reaches operating temp. i know i put diesel in and not gasoline, so i dont know what could be the problem.
thanks for the replys, i drained the fuel/water seperator and the problem is still there, also rechecked the fuel cap, it definitly only has a problem after it warms up to operating temp. as soon as it reaches operating temp the service engine light comes on and starts running rough at all rpms. not sure were to look next.
i just took it to autozone, and they scanned it there, im gonna take it to ford tomorrow and get it scanned, when they scanned it at autozone all the sensors came up n/a except the misfire sensor, tested ok
just got word from ford, they tell me it has 2 bad injectors and both harness's under the valve covers are bad to the tune of $2200.00 to fix it. this sounds like alot for whats being fixed, if in fact thats the problem.
i have an 01 with the same symptoms, except that all 8 injectors have a High to low side open. i havent done the pinpoint tests to determine if it is in the injectors, the harness, or the IDM itself. but i would have to agree with the ford shop. it is deffinatly a fuel injector circuit problem
you have a short harness loose under one of the valve covers , need to run injector buzz test when hot and acting up and youll find which side it is or yet you can pull both and go ahead and take care of your problem , there are clips you can by from ford that go under the harness tab to hold it from coming loose again
thanks for the replys , found a desiel shop that can help me out for half of what ford wants to do the job with the same warranty and factory parts, they were telling me if the trucks got 150000 miles on it, its best to replace all the injectors ive got 134000 so i think im gonna just do the harness and #2and #8 injector, ford really thinks these parts are gold plated.
I have over 150000 miles on mying and I just had a blown head gasket. They replaced the head gaskets shaved .009 off heads magnifluxed them both replaced the valve cover gaskets and repaired some wires on the main harness also replaced all the orings on the injectors and repaired an oil leak problem or oring failure in back of the turbo also repaired the turbo the last jacka@# didn't take care of the truck. cost me 3800.00.
