I do a lot of driving in my 94.5 PSD and have recently been very interested in converting to WVO because diesel in Salt Lake City is around $3. The problem that I have is that I am on an extremely tight budget for conversion, but if I could get my weekly fuel bill down (currently $400-$500) obviously my wallet wouldn't be so tight. Salt Lake can be a cold place in the winter but seeing as how it is becoming warmer(60 degrees now, 110 degrees in the summer) I was wonder if I could piece together a cheaper system for a few months that would help me get my fuel costs down right away. If so than what components will I need. Is it possible to skip fuel line heaters or fuel filter heaters? Obviously something has to get the oil flowing but in temps above 60 degrees will it stay flowing?
I'm new to this post and don't know if I'll get flamed for telling you about this but here goes. I am going to change my 96 F250 to an SVO system when I save up the money. For now I am using the "Diesel Secret" method which is filtering wast oil and thinning it with a % on kerosene and, Gas for a little octane boost, it runs fine. I live in south Georgia so I don't have to worry about gelling. It will gell up in the winter. A diesel engine will run fine on 20% kerosine and 80% veggie oil. My truck has about 10,000 miles on the mix. You can also put regular diesel in the same tank if you want it just thins the oil more. I bought the starter kit for about 50.00 from the ds website but only used thier "special additive" for the first few batches. The only real problems I had were the same problems you will have with any wast oil system, bad oil, and water in the oil. You need to filter the oil to get it as clean and water free as possible. Collecting oil is a nasty until you get the hang of it. The collection process is the same so you can decide if you really want to do this. You trade sweat for cheaper fuel. Oh! The nice thing about the old body style fords, Duel Tanks. You can flush just by switching tanks a half mile before you stop. Good Luck.
