I have a buddy with a 97 f250. today we were driving it and stopped at the store. came out and the truck wouldn't start by turning the key.. we had to jump the solenoid and it starts fine. the key operates as it should as the wts light comes on but when you hit the key nothing happens. we took a test light and checked the power to the solenoid when turning the key and the small trigger wire has no power. any suggestions on where to start?
Are you referring to the relay on the fender? That's often mistakenly called a "solenoid"; the solenoid is on the starter.
Automatic or manual tranny? Automatics have a switch on the shifter that sends power to the starter relay only in Park or Neutral. Manuals have a switch on the clutch pushrod that sends power only when the clutch pedal is floored. Check whichever switch is applicable to you.
If it is an auto, will it start when its in 'N'? Is the shifter sloppy at all? If its sloppy it may be your problem, it can be tightened up under dash
