I was wondering how do I check the levels in my high pressure oil system? Is it a closed system or does it use my engine oil? When i get an oil change do i need to change the oil in the HPOP.? I'm still learning the ins-and-outs of my diesel engine.
It uses the engine oil system. The LPOP supplies the HPOP. The only time you wouk=ld have an issue with losing oil in the HPOP is if the LPOP is bad or you are low on oil or are suffering from a drainback issue. The drainback issue is found on the 94.5 and 95 engines.
They say to change the HPOP oil as well...even tho it uses the engine oil, it basically gets up there and stays, it only takes a few extra minutes to change it, but you will need a small hand or vacuum pump to pump out the oil. you can only get it out about a quart at a time but there is only 3 quarts up there. basic....remove a quart, add a quart. replace plug and run engine to circulate HPOP oil. remove plug take a quart out, put a quart in. repeat until hpop oil is clean. your injectors will love you forever for doing this
thanks for the quick responses guys. I recently switched back to thicker oil from a synthetic 5w30 to a conventional 15w30 and have noticed smoother idle, and maybe even a little more power. Does the HPOP run better with thicker oil or does it make a difference?
I think you should be using 15W40 if dino oil. I did the hpop oil change in my 94.5 and removed sludgy crap then added Rotella plus a bottle of Duralube. Made an awesome difference in my truck (can't speak for anyone else). Be forewarned however that there's a few threads out there that end in p*ssing contests about doing this. I don't think this is something you need to do at every oil change as it's a total pain in the a$$ to do. I was figuring on maybe doing it once or twice a year.
I wasn't aware of a drainback problem in the early PSD. Can anyone elaborate on this more? My trucks no thang of beauty but it runs great mechanically and I want to keep it that way. :icon_ford:

My 94 F350 (That I just picked up last Sunday) did that to me, after sitting in my garage for a day or two. I put about a quart in the HPOP reservoir and it's been running fine since. When I bought the truck, it was about a quart low in the crankcase. Started fine when I bought it, but drained back at home.
I did top off the oil in the crankcase, as well as the HPOP reservoir. No problems since.
I intend on doing the standpipe mod and using the reservoir from a 96. They didn't have the drain back problem...
also curious about the drain back, and i have no oil pressure coming out of my HPOP,like if you take the steel braided line off the valve cover and crank the truck over only a trickle of oil comes out of the line, and i was told that it should blast out at close to 600psi ????
^^^^ thats not right it should be blasting out of there. you might have a low oil pressure issue. i would check to make sure your getting low pressure oil and if you are maybee your hpressure oil pump is shot. I change the oil in the top end, i dont care what anyone say about it being necessary or unnecessary. at the end of the day replacing any old oil with new, is a good idea, especially if your changing oil viscosity
ok thanks !! i know it has good oil pressure on the gauge while it cranks over. but the IPR on the HPOP is all loose and wont tighten up and i can move it all around by hand its loose so ???? :dunno:
sorry about that!! g/f is workin on gettin her paypal up, her Credit card is expired and we need to wait for the new card! i did pm you but you said you didn get one befor ? , yes i does want that pump and such, even if it aint my problem it be nice to have, but im pretty sure it is wouldn yah think bud ??
i dont totally understand the drainback. i have heard if you have a 94.5 or 95 you need a different replacement HPOP? Cant use one from a regular 96 or even the 17* from an NBS?
