Do I have to do anything in specific before I unplug my EGR? Does it have to be opened or closed or do I simply unplug it and run it? :dunno: looking forward to feed back and the outcome after I unplug. thanks guys. happy easter.
If you unplug it with the engine and key off then it should be shut. That is the desired position. Other than that, I have not heard of anybody doing anything else. You may get a check engine light with it unplugged.

i had to unplug mine. i could instantly tell a difference. But never threw a code or check engine light. the egr valve has been replaced 2 times and cleaned once by 2 different ford dealerships since sept. 06 and still doing same thing. just got it out of shop fri and am having to take it back in the mornin g for same thing.
2004 Ford F-250 6.0L Powerstroke. Just unplugged it again and it runs like a new one. With EGR plugged up it acts like it is running out of fuel, you can hold it on the floor and it will pick back up but the whole time it is doing this it will bellow black smoke like a frieght train
I unplugged mine, feels like it runs better. The bad side is the check engine light came on. 06 f350. Went back and plugged it in but the light won't go off.
Any ideas how to get the light out? Maybe disconnecting the batteries for a few hours, and then let the computer re learn?

The EGR recirculates some exhaust gases back into the intake after it has been cooled and filtered, its for better emissions. The new 08 uses up 25% of the exaust in the EGR system. Thats why you get better performance when unplugged, because youre getting all new air in instead of some old gasses.
Unplugging it basically stops exhaust gas (hot air) from recirculating back through the engine. Ever notice how your truck runs better in cool air rather than hot air...Anyone who freqents the dragstrip has probably seen people put bags of ice on motors and intercooler in between passes, this is why...
i will be unplugging mine when i get home. so as long as i unplug it with the key off i should be good. when the check engine light comes on doe it put the truck into any kind of "safe" mode until the code is cleared?
if your cel comes on you can plug it back in and see if it goes away or find someone that won't charge you up the wazoo to clear the code. after it is clear and you leave it unplugged the cel could possibly be set again. not a biggie, only downside is if something else is going wrong you won't know cuz your cel is already on. let us know how it runs and if your cel came on. unk:
i have a bullydog programer, so i can clear the light out. actually, it will not work at the moment due to a new ford flash, so i dont know if it will clear the codes until i get it updated.
So let me get this right, unplug one thing, get better MPG, Throttle, maybe more HP, and the worst that can happen is a CEL light? no other drawbacks? Has anyone dynoed with and without it? What about the engine warm up time? will this make it take longer in the cold weather?
I unplugged mine earlier today and got no check engine light, to be honest I didnt get a chance to drive far, but throttle response did seem better and ran better. Couldnt tell ya mileage. Ill post again after I get to drive for a while and do a couple cold starts.
thank you marc. I unplugged mine and noticed that my turbo was not cycling. the only thing I like about the 06e17 flash. marc, would unplugging the egr cause the pcm to not engage a turbo learn cycle while it samples the maf and map? if you answer the question, THANK YOU in advance.
If the PCM doesnt recieve all the imputs it wants, no, its not gonna do a full relearn stratagy...
your getting into some pretty complicated stratagy, but yes, the PCM isnt just looking at map and maf, its also looking at both intake air heaters (when egr is flowing it should see a raise in temp in IAT2)....along with the egr position sensor (internal to the valve) and a lot of other things. If the vains are actually closed too much because the PCM feels it needs to create more backpressure, it can actually hurt performance by creating an actual exhaust restriction....
Marc, so unplugging is bad, is there a permenent fix for constant egr codes? our test equipment cant run the KOEO/KOER so we are stuck. Any ideas? thanks

the only way to properly disable the EGR is through PCM programming.....basically a programmer that eliminates EGR from the stratagy (an SCT with custom tunes would be the easiest way)
for what it's worth, i have the 06e17 flash on my truck and unplugging the egr automatically set the check engine light with a p0402.
