clutch pedal sits and actuates way to high??

Hi All,
I have been lurking around here for a while, and now I need some advice. I have been on the hunt for a 99-02 7.3 with a 6 speed ever since i sold my 94.5 f350 5-speed truck. I live up in VT and everything is rusted out here so I have been searching down south and out west. I finally found a really clean late 99 that is exactly what I am looking for, it is very clean and has relatively low miles. I am flying down to look at it this weekend, and hopefully buy it and drive it home.

Here is the problem: apparently the clutch pedal sits and engages very high. The current owner has driven it 8000 miles since the problem started and nothing has changed. He sent me some pictures and it looks like the clutch sits so high that it almost (or actually does) hit the dash.

He claims that the engagement point is also very high. The clutch was replaced withing the last 10000 miles by a decent truck shop, so I think the issue must be with the master and/or slave. I know those plastic clips are prone to breaking and making the pedal sit low, but I haven't heard of an extremely high pedal that still actually engages the clutch. Is there something in the master that can break and let the pedal sit way to far out? I am hoping I can get the $150 master/slave assembly and that will fix the problem. Does anyone have any input for me? I was able to negociate the price down quite a bit because of this problem, and I am not scared of doing any mechanical work as long as the truck has a clean body.

Thanks in advance, sorry for the long-winded post.

Here is a pic of the truck

dose it look like this?

if so there's a clip in the back of the master that broke, I don't know if you can buy just the clip but I replaced the master-slave assembly and that took care of it.

yes!! thats exactly what it looks like. I already planned on replacing the master/slave, but thats great to hear. Is this something that the dealers stock? I might just get one before my trip and replace it at the guys house. I have a 1000 mile trip home, and I would hate to loose clutch function half way there.

the current owner claims that he has driven the truck for months with the pedal like this, would I be a fool to attempt to drive it all the way back to vt with the clutch like this?

I bought mine at napa I think it was $170, it takes like 15 min replace it so I would just bring the new one with you fix it down there before the long drive

thank you very much for the info. I am quite sure this is the problem with this truck. I was able to barter the price down from 12k to 10.5k because of this issue :)

does anyone know if there is a write up for the changing of the master/slave setup? It looks very straight forward, but the only thing I am confused about is the plastic arms that hold the slave cylinder compressed on the new setup. It looks to me that maybe you install the whole assembly and when the clutch is pressed the first time, the plastic arms break away and allow the slave piston to travel outward. Does this sound right?

that is correct.

got this all replaced last night and added one of those heim joints instead of the crappy stock eyelet with plastic bushing. Clutch works great now, thanks for all the help!
