My 1995 250 has the worst starting habits in the mornings, Over the past week ive tried different ideas each morning, If i plug it in it will fire up just fine (due to a high electric bill and where i park at its not an option every night). Ive tried letting the glow plugs run their 2 minute run to heat as much as possible (ive timed the relay with my voltmeter and it goes for about a minute 45 give or take) still wont fire up without cranking for 20 minutes intermittently. I know the idea of cycling glow plugs is just not right since they stay on but if i do that with the "wait to start" light, on the second time she will fire right up. Ive tested the glow plugs and i have one dead one, the rest spec out within range. Ive done the voltage drop test on the relay and hot side reads 11.7, switch side reads 10.7. Im aware this is an issue and ive only found that out as of last night so im getting a new relay for it ASAP but id like to know is that why i have to cycle my plugs or is my truck just the one off production model where that had to be done? thanks for any input anyone has on my dilemma
I also have had the same issues until I replaced all glow plugs with ford dealer plugs new relay and then new Batteries. Now i dont have to plug her in.
check fuel pressure. my truck has the same problems right now and i have a fass system as soon as the pump bogs down (means its at pressure) the truck starts real easy. oh and its been a solid 15degrees around here. not plugged in
well i know ive got 6 glow plugs that are in spec, one dead one, and one i couldnt check due to not being double jointed.
I never thought of fuel pressure. ive been ,meaning to get a gauge since i did the FPR mod
Were you probing at the UVCH connectors? Shouldn't be that hard to reach :dunno: .
Weak GPR (high voltage drop) is def. a major factor.
How much per kWh are you paying for electricity? A heavy-duty timer is, like, $10, and it should only need about 3 hours; even at, say, 15 cents / kWh, that's only half a buck.
It has been my experience that one bad glow plug makes it way harder to start. I have put in aftermarket glow lugs from Auto Value parts store and had good luck with those. way cheaper than Ford. That and i don't trust my dealer.
the uvch plug on the rear drivers side is semi covered by the intake hose and i was somewhat in a hurry so i didnt take the hose off. I know the relay is an issue but i dont see it being my only one. As for the power bill the timer isnt effective since i never know when im gonna be going places its kinda hit and miss so unless i plug it in 24-7 its not alot of use to me and my dad yells that its plugged in all the time.
Ive also heard not to trust aftermarket plugs, my dads 94 he put napa plugs in about oh a year or two ago and hes down to maybe 4 or 5 that work propperly, but at 10 bucks a plug its an easy route to take if you dont know about them
