My p/u is used to pull a 34 ft 3 tipout travel trailer. It has been running perfect until two weeks ago. I had all filters changed while I was in Washington State then before I left I got fuel in Washington state western side and drove back to Montana and when I drove about 500 miles I started up a long mountian pass. I severly lost power and my 4 speed automatic down shifted from 4th to 3rd (drive) but didn't seem to down shift any father until I was nearly stalled. I crept along at about 3 MPH until the top of the pass. The engine was missing and bucking but I could not stop because of no shoulders and blind corners. When I got to the top of the pass I drained the fuel/water seperator and got a massive amount of water out. I then drove another 100 miles with no problems then slowly started losing power again. So I drain filter again, and more water. Now pickup runs fine when I am not towing anything but when I do hitch back to my trailer, it runs good untill I hit a steep hill. Then the same loss of power and shuttering goes on until I flatten out then it pulls good again. 150000 miles, no blow by and does not burn oil or leak water. Any suggestions? Oh engine is tubro and does not smoke unless I'm in that hard pull. Could I have lost an injector ? It does seem to miss when I am pulling a steep hill. I am still getting some water from my tank but just a bit more than normal now.
I haven't pulled any codes because I don't have a reader. Is there a way to check codes thru flashing the key? Plus what is an injector buzz and how do I perform that?
You have to have a reader/programmer that can do a buzz test. I would not buy one of the cheap ones. And I am not sure what Ford would charge ya at the stealership to do one. It is no big deal but I would guess that they would charge you an arm and a leg.
Okay, I took my p/u to Ford and they said that it is not showing any codes. Nor were any codes stored.:thud: Could it have just been bad fuel and water in the system?
Yeah certainly could. Do you use a fuel conditioner like powerservice or standyne? That helps get rid of the water in your tank. Basically it will suspend the water in the fuel so it can make it to your fuel water seperator. Also if you got lots of water in the tank that may cause you to form algae in the tank. The bugs need the water for oxygen to survive so if you have algae you will have to get rid of the water or kill it off with biocide. Check your fuel filter bowl and see if you have any green or black slime in the bottom of the bowl.
Thanks I will pull filter which was just changed two weeks ago and check for algae. If I find some, I take it I can go to any auto parts place and get some algaecide? Plus I do use powerservice but did not have any on this trip. I bought the Ford equivelent to powerservice from the dealership and have put some of that in. The truck is running very good at this point but I haven't pulled my trailer or hit any real adverse hills with it since doing all the water work.
