I have a 1995 with the 7.3. The truck is normally in wamer temps but now I have it in a much cooler area and on the initial start up it has a really bad oil leak coming from somewhere on the mid to lower drivers side of the engine "I think".It stops after about a minute or so.Any ideas will much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Is your oil filter screwed on all the way?

I don't think the oil coolers leak like that? The ones and my problem with mine was that the oil and coolant is mixing.

On my buddy's 97 it was the 1.5" cap/plug toward the top of the engine at the very back...it has a square hole in it for putting a 3/8" ratchet. His was a constant leak, however, but you may want to check it out. I found it by turning the engine on and using a flashlight and dental mirror. Just be sure to steer clear of the fan and belts. Good luck.

It depends which cooler o-ring goes. If the outer o-ring leaks, it'll leak oil. If the inner o-ring leaks, it will mix the coolant and oil.

Hmm... I like the sound of this (as opposed to a head gasket). I've had the same type of major oil leak for some time, but only when it's really cold, say below 20* F, and only for a minute or two. I just went out to check my coolant and change the oil, and noticed the dreaded coolant milk shake. Checked the oil... same there. The truck has been running fine, still making normal boost, consuming normal amounts of fuel, feels great on power. It sounds like it's nearly impossible to blow an HG on these motors.

I'm going to keep searching around and see what else I can come up with, but I'm going to have to bring 'er in for this one, hopefully the local shop (highly recommended by everyone) knows their way around a 7.3 powerstroke.
