Sorry for the long post, but I want to describe the issue as best I can. Any help would be appreciated!
This started happening about a week ago and it seems to be getting worse. It just cuts off and then fired back on it’s own after a second or two before I can even react. There have been a couple of occasions that it didn’t fire back up by itself and I had to crank it. It took a few cranks (abnormal) on those occasions. It is an abrupt loss of power without warning. It shuts down so fast that it’s startling.
The first time was once cruising on the hwy (65mph). It did this just once that day. The next day it did it 3 times during in town driving. The crazy thing is that it seems to idle fine forever without dying. It happens so fast without warning and it's back running again so quick that I hardly have time to notice any symptoms. It's running smooth before & after. Everything else (radio, heater, etc.) is still on when the engine is dead, so I know I’m having a total electrical failure.
The only thing that I *think* I noticed on a couple occasions was the “water-in-fuel” light came on right after it died, but then went off. So... I drained the filter (HFCM). It had less than 1/2 teaspoon of water in it, but there was some trash. I went ahead and changed the fuel filters. They didn't look too bad. (They only had about 40k on them.) Purged the air from the lines and it was running nice and smooth in the driveway for a good 10 minutes. Took off for a test drive and didn't get more than 2 miles before it died. It somehow fires back up by itself as I'm coasting on the shoulder. It died a couple times in a 5 mile stretch. I turned around to take it back home and it seemed to run fine the whole way back to the house.
I guess I’m saying that this is an random intermittent problem.
Any other ideas for what I should look at? The stealer ship wants $205 just to look at it and I haven't found any other PSD techs/mechs in my area.
