Rattly lund moonvisor, self tapping screws are stripped, need ideas to fix.

Hello,
My 96's PO installed a lund moonvisor with self tapping "tek" screws. From the first day I bought the truck the moonvisor has been noisy, rattling and moving around, I tightend the screws down and that would help for about 90 miles, then would start again, (screws would loosen up).

I took out the screws on the top 4 center holes and installed some rivets made for holding on snowmobile fairings. That worked for a few days, but now its back to rattling, and just tore the rivets out.

I have pulled the headliner down partially and cannot get underneath the double celling panel to bolt the thing down.

My thought was to drill through both the roof, the inner roof (if thats what you call it) and the headliner, put in bolts to hold it down, and cover the bolts with a cb radio mount, but want that to be my last option.

This thing is driving me nuts. I love the look of it, and do not want to completely remove it and deal with the 6 holes and paint rubbed away that would be left.

Can anyone give me any suggestions on what to do?

Ok your problem is that the holes that were created to hold down the visor have stretched out. You need to completely remove the visor and clean off all of the sealant. Then take a pointed hammer that is used for body work or a deepwell socket that is just slightly larger than the holes and tap the metal back down until it is just below flush with the surrounding metal. Then reapply sealant to the holes and reinstall the visor after cleaning off old sealant. Tighten the bolts down but do not over tighten which is what caused your problem to begin with. You can also apply some sealant to the bolts before installing them which will help prevent them from loosening up again.

Also, do you have a bug shield? They will play havoc with the air flow over the windshield.

you could weld in flange then run the bolt through it

I had the same issue with my 93 F150's, but over the course of about a year...

It sounds like there is alot of tension on the screws so maybe the holes arent lined up very well? You could always jb weld the screws in there?

They make a thread'd plug that is actually suppost to go in first. you drill the hole for the plug insert plug and tighten then put on visor... your problem will be solved if you can find these... Not sure what they are called but you should be able to find them at a body shop or parts shop.. Someone will have them... Just putting them in with self taping screwes into sheet metal will not hold with all that wind force.

Rivnuts are what are in the doors of the trucks with anything but the little power mirrors. The sun/moonvisors are not supplied with rivnuts as they are not designed to be used with rivnuts. Rivnuts are designed to be used with bolts and not selftapping screws. You could use rivnuts however if you so choose. Just make sure you purchase ones that will go in securely otherwise you will end up with a real mess if you lock one in and it spins inside the hole. you will have one heck of a time trying to drill it out as all it will do is spin in the hole.

All the holes for my visor have these installed with small bolts... Everyone that i have seen has been the same way up in my neck of the wood... actually never seen one that just used self taping screws... maby the installers up here do it diffrent
