so i finnally managed to get the clutch fan nut off and removed the old water pump. i then put on all nessesary gaskets etc. and started to bolt it back onto the block.. the kit i bought from "lordco" auto parts came with new bolts, the short ones didnt match up with the stock bolts so i just used the stock ones.... the longer ones were completley identical in size/length/thread so i used the new ones.... i hand tightened everything and then started to tighten the bolts with a 3/8 drive, 1/4 extension, and a 10mm... i started with the small ones and snuged em up and continued in a star pattern of tightening...i then got to the first of the new long bolts and tried to snug it up.......SNAP ... wtf.. the bolt is loose and i freely pulled it out to find that the bolt sheered and of course left a 3/4" section of thread about 1" into my block.... i couldn't believe this had just happened... i wasnt even torqueing them yet... im surprised i didnt flip out...
so after talking to my dad for about 1/2 an hour about the situation, im gonna go into the parts dealer and raise hell, dont know what they will do for me. but i was curious to see if it was only one defective bolt so i grabed another of there "new bolts" and placed it in the vise. i actually pulled out my camera on my phone and started to record it just incase it sheered again... sure enough i watch my friend easily completley sheer this stupid bolt right in half... (what are the the torque specs on the bolts going into the block securing the water pump?)
that's horrible man! sry to hear. hopefully, someone will be along to supply the torque specs. if those new bolts won't hold that torque, i'd say you have a legit. gripe. with that, i'd press the part supplier, or their vendor to foot the bill. if you have a lawyer friend, a letter on their letterhead should make an impression.
you'd probably end up footing the bill until it get's settled tho....
hey, crazy idea: if you finish installing the rest of the bolts, does the pump gasket leak? if it's your only vehicle, this may get you mobile...
if you go at it with the easy-out, make sure you don't snap that too. that's where things really start sucking! -maybe get your hands on a right angle drill. but, those throw another angle at drilling a straight hole....
well, anyway, good luck and I hope you get it resolved quick like.
Torque spec is only 18 ft lbs. Not nearly what you think it would be, it doesn't take much to seal the rubber o ring gasket. To much torque and you destroy the seal. Don't panic!!! Use a small dremel tool or right angle drill and drill a hole in the center of the bolt and use a easy out. Sears also sells some other gizmos that actually work!! If you want to sue someone for the Bill it's to the store that's responsible, it's the manufacturer, that is why I only recommend pumps from Northern Auto, as they made the stock one.
Good luck, but when you work on cars/trucks, these things happen and you need to think and not panic, you will be fine!!
so heres my question... if it only requires 18ft/lbs then i wonder if i could attain this but threading whats left of the bolt in. i drew a diagram to help make things clear
I wouldn't, pull the old piece out first and use the correct bolt. You can get a right angle drill in there, you may want to use a piece of tubing as a drill guide to keep from destroying the threads.
I am not saying what you want to do won't work, but it's not something I would ever do.
Ditto, I would only add that left handed drill bits usually work in a situation where there is not much torque involved, can get a five piece from car quest for about 12 bucks, similar from napa and others.
got a drill in there and got an "easy out" and finally got it out! yea i never wanted to do anything like that...so i took my time.. did it right and now i have peice of mind. thanks guys for all your input!
Glad you got it out, lesson learned, next time know the torque specs before you start wrenching, it is just as important as getting the new water pump!!
Check the package the bolts came in....made in china?
