well i just got a 2000 reg cab long bed 7.3 work truck for 3400.00 and i bought it only to cut up and lower into a shortbed. but i would like to keep my fuel tank so i looked under the truck and leaving the fuel tank as is, i could move the axle foward about 5-6 inches. so im thinking of doing that and bobbing the bed as short as i can. than cut the wheel panel out and moving it forward to match the axle location. then lower it and throw on some 22,s and 24,s. as well as some mods to the 7.3. heres a pic of the truck and another photoshop of the plan, i guess it will be a long wheelbase shortbed.
just make the right cuts and i see no reason why not, for 3400.00 im willing to try it on this rig. im thinking of cutting first the wheel panel like this first, then cut across the whole bed to get my wanted legnth wich will close the opening up. then place the opening where i want sine i will have blank bedside at this point.
and after this i could then install aftermarket wheelwells to fit wider tires.
well i got a little done i took out 13" behind the wheel and 5" in front of the wheel. i cut out the wheel arch so i only have one cut in the bed. wheelwells are 5 inches to far back, but im putting larger tubs to fit some big 24,s. i still need to cut 5" from the inner bed out back then i can slied the back of the bed forward. the rear is already slid forward but needs to go 5 more to be done.
no axle is still in same place, i need to move it forward 5". im going to try just moving the hangers forward on the frame. i think the rear bumper might hide the rear hanger and shackle.
I am running an excursion tank, but the short bed can be done and keep the fuel tank in the stock location. It just requires a tank from a CC shortbed and a custom front cross member.
i have no idea what my last post was, but i made some progress. i got the rest cut and had a hell of a time getting the spring hangers off. but got and moved the axle forward 5 inches and raised all my hangers and got 4 inches lower. and as you can see the springs set out behind the end of the bed, but the bumper with modified brackets covers the shackles and hangers. so it did end up a 6.5 bed, 13" shorter behind wheel and 5" shorter in front of the wheel. still got to shorten driveshaft and weld bedsides. going to get 3" lower rear springs and 3" lower i beams and 1 lower coils for the front. and still running the stock longbed tank.
hard to get a good pic till i get it out of the garage.
its not going to be sitting on the frame, i will still be able to tow with it. i dont tow a 5th wheel or anything. i never had a diesel and this idea sounded cool. and i can still use it for everything i need it for. i also own a 2000 superduty 4wd extracab. so if i need the 4wd i got it.
no its not done, got layed off and found another job that pays alot less. so just been trying to keep my house and keep food on the table for the kids. and after thinking about i decided to leave it bobbed , but i bought a 2003 d60 front axle and all needed parts to make it 4 wheel drive. and im going to be attaching the bedsides to the cab and cutting the roof off and the back out the cab. and doing a full cage that will also be used to carry a soft top. mabey even graft in rear door sections. now that money slowly getting better, it will get done just not as fast as i would like.
Well this is were it's at now, has 5 inches of lift through front hangers and a rear shackle flip and has bushwhacker cutouts. With 20x12 black wheels with 40" toyos. I'm not done but I'm getting somewhere.
Dang completely different than how you first wanted it to go lol. Cool project though cant wait to see it finished
