Well I've got a new old 1999 f250, 7.3 6spd. Love it.

My top mods I'm thinking are a straight pipe in place of the muffler (looove the sound), some sort of intake, then a chip/tuner.

Whats your thoughts and input?

1. is a straight pipe good enough in place of the cat? Or would a whole new exhaust (bigger) be better?

2. what kind of intake works well/sounds well on these?

3. which tuner/chip for my psd?

And any and all other input is welcomed!!

I have a 4" turbo back with a muffler. I wouldn't want it any louder!

DIY Tymar (open filter element) works well.

I have a Tony Wildman (TW) chip and love it. Can't go wrong! :thumb:

Good call on the DIY Tymer setup.. I'm gonna probably end up doing this.

I LOOOOOVE the sound of a nasty straight pipe 7.3, the best sounding motor in the world next to a flowmaster 40 series 5.0.

What kind of power does your chip provide you with?

Ya I'm thinking I'm just gonna cut the cat and muffler out and run straight pipe. Will this make an impact on inspection? I've never owned a diesel, therefore I dont know what inspection is like.

Thanks for the nappa part number. I'm gonna do that tymar/nappa deal. Ahhh I wish it was morning and not wet out; I want to go for a spin!

Where in NC are you located?

Fort Bragg! We should go 'stroking together sometime (no ****, of course..)

Bragg is a long way from me. I am an hour south of Asheville. Had you been closer, I was going to suggest just that. I even have a filter I was going to give you. I switched from the NAPA (I actually used a Baldwin) to a tapered AMSOIL filter (see my signature). I believe it takes in more air because it is not squeezed in between the battery, fender, fuse box and hood.

Have fun with the mods.

Is yours an early or late 99?

Asheville NC??? I was just there last weekend buying an Escalade actually. I've always wanted to go to the Land Rover manor over in there.

But you should definitely invest in hooking me up w/ that filter ;)

How do I tell if it's a late or early PSD?

To determine if your truck is an early or late 1999 model year, locate the tag on the drivers side door. Vehicles built before 12/7/98 are considered early 99 and vehicle built after 12/7/98 are considered late 99. Late 99s are pretty much the same as 2000-2003 but there are differences in all the models.

Have a good one. I need to hit the sack. First light will find me pulling and replacing the half axles on my wife's Impala. Re-doing the brakes too.

Nice chatting with you.

Later.

Ya I zonked out last night lol. But thats a pretty nice setup you've got there. Looks real good.

But er um.. I dont mind a used filter.. a few months isn't bad tee hee

Wow. So I just checked the underhood out again getting a real close look at things. I noticed the air restriction gauge was maxed out so I checked the filter. W.O.W, and I dont mean World Of Warcraft.
That thing is FILTHY. It's got so much **** in it and the orange filter is more like black. Instead of just buying a new stock filter I'm going to just do the Tymar filter.

Who can deny the performance/economy and most of all the SOUND differences with an open filter?

#16 ·
be sure to get gauges before u get to far into mods, its a good idea to do before a tuner or chip. I have the diy intake and i just cut the muffler out and welded a pipe in place, love the sound. Im just saveing money to get my gauges and pillar pod in:thumb:

#18 ·
I ya like you said I'll probably do that before I get the tuner. Not before the exhaust and intake though; I need to get these mods rolling!

#19 ·
A cat/muffler delete is a great money saving way to go that works perfect!

A Napa 6637 filter and a four inch piece of pipe is great for an intake. Works perfect also!

A Tony Wildman seems to be the most popular chip for our trucks!

I am about to install an exhaust system on a 7.3 for a guy. I don't know much about the 7.3's, so what exhaust system do you all recommend?

#22 ·
just depends on what the guy wants, you can always just cut the muffler out (cat if it has one) and just go with that I think it sounds awesome straight piped, thats what i did to mine, as far as buyin a exaust im not sure someone will come along and put in about it, IMO straight pipe is the only way to go :woot::thumb:

I'm going the delete/straight pipe route and was curious how inspection works on these rigs? Do they need the cat/muffler? How will it pass otherwise?

#24 ·
No the turbo is considered a muffling devise or something i cant remember, i do know it will pass, I straight piped my truck the day i got it and had to get it inspected a few days later, if its a late 99-2003 they will just do a safety inspection not a emissions inspection, at least thats how it is in Travis county

#26 ·
Interesting. I'll be moving back to NY soon and they do full emissions testing and all that, but I dont know the first thing about getting a diesel inspected there.

And since you say they dont do emissions testing that means they wont check for the cat right?

#28 ·
NY is pretty damn strict, but again I have NO idea on how they run diesels around there. Maybe I should call some diesel shops up there and ask them.

#31 ·
Yeah if the cat did not come stock on the truck then they cant make you have one, my truck didnt have a cat stock , just a muffler. Just see what they guys in ny sat here in tx we like our loudness and black smoke :rockwoot:

#32 ·
^lol.

I honestly dont know if my truck has a cat. I'm gonna climb under tomorrow and check it out though!

#33 ·
Well my truck has no cat.. yippie! So all I've got to do is straight pipe the exhaust!
