Hello, I'm new to the forum, and have been getting a lot of good information from following the posts so far. I've got a question about my 1999 f-350 powerstroke crew-cab. I've got approx. 166k miles on it now. I seem to be getting more road wandering than I remember. I would like to know if there is something I need to replace or add that would help this out? I was also considering putting a air intake system on it, and was wondering if it's worth it? I'm mainly concerned with improving fuel mileage. Also, is there anything that can be done to a transmission, besides a complete rebuild, that will help it to shift a little smoother? I know this might seem stupid to ask, but I'm a carpenter, not a mechanic, and I know I'll get good advise from you guys. Thank you. David
i dont know about the wondering, maybe new front end? tie rods, drag links etc. as for the intake, click here. this is a home made intake that works rather well and is awhole lot cheaper than any thing else out there. as for the tranny, im in the same boat. i need faster more consistant shifts. thought i had er fixed once, guess not. hope this VERY little info helped. and welcome :thumb:
Welcome to the forum woodbutcher. I agree with super stroke. Could be tie rod ends and/or maybe alinement. As for the tranny shifts, I have the same gripe. Faster shifts would be nice. Nature of the beast I rekon. As for fuel miliage, try to keep her below 2000RPM's. Heard many people say this works and it seems they are right. I know, hard to do, but I went from 15MPG running 75MPH to around 18MPG running 60MPH.
With that mileage, it's certainly possible that your steering box is wearing. Jack up the front axle and check it out - too much play there is no fun. If you're lucky, you can adjust some/most of it out.
it will be one of three things. it could be all of them. you either have loose ball joints, the short drag link at your pitman arm is loose, or your gearbox is getting sloppy.
