I have a 99 250SD 2wd with the 7.3
Truck has 1.38 million miles on the completely original drivetrain.
has had the infamous '99 trans rattle for the last 900,000 miles.

Last night on my way home from work, I pulled off the interstate and stopped at the end of the ramp, when I hit the throttle, it just revved. No forward gears.
If I drop it in reverse and rev it up, it will slam into reverse and then will engage forward gears for a few minutes.
when it is working, everything works fine and normal.

Any ideas?

This is my highest mileage truck, I have a 99 250, an 01 350, 99 450, 01 550 and none have less than 300k.

Had an 04 for about 6 months, ford bought it back though.

regardless, any ideas on what it is doing? I don't think the trans itself is bad as it works normally once you get it into a gear. Seems like a poor flow issue in the valve body, does it have solenoids to control gear selection?

No, fluid is fresh and clean. Nothing burnt.
