the ccv mod, is this the little black box on top of the valve cover on drivers side? It has a little 90 degree tube coming into the intake tubing right after the airbox?well sort of right past the air box? If so, anyone have any pics of the mod? or a good description?
thx
ccv stands for crank case ventilation. all a ccv mod does is relocate the entry of the air flowing into the crank case. If you take off you air filter and look down into the turbo, midway, you will see a small "hole with a hood" that allows air to travel down the crank case. In stock configuration, the entrance hole allows oil to leak through the turbo, intercooler, ect. in most cases it saturates the turbo boots and causes them to leak and lets boost pressure escape. There are a bunch of different kits online that relocate the entrance of the ccv different places.
Not to nit pick, the description is mostly right, but in most cases the air is coming OUT of the crankcase due to blow by, etc. That is why you get oil in the intake.
Some people have just put a filter on there, I'm sure some people on here have done it, but it is my understanding that it is pretty easy to turn a 7.3 into an "oil fountain" so to speak if the flow resistance isn't just right. The cheapest way is to turn the housing around and just run a piece of heater hose out the back, but it stinks and will drip some oil. The other option is to run a "catch can". Cheapest way to do this aside from build your own is probably to buy one of the ones that NCHornet designed. I know Raul@stealthautomotive sells them. I have one sitting in my garage that I just haven't got around to installing yet. It will be happening eventually though. :thumb: Oh yeah, if I remember right there is a write up in the tech files on this site.
Solid98, I would look at where the ccv comes out of the valve housing first, if you didn't use new seals it can be difficult to get the old o-rings back in right after they have swollen and what not. Along with that I would also check for any low spots in the hose that may be acting like a trap in a sink drain and letting oil puddle up so it effectively "seals" the hose from in restricted airflow.
I used new o-rings on the doghouse. I routed the hoses as instructed, no low spots, over the brake master cylinder, and I am able to blow air thru both hoses at the filter with little to no resistance. I have a sneaky suspicion my dipstick o-ring decided to fail at just this time. No standing oil in the valley but the bottom of the pan looks like it was dipped in a bucket of oil.
I'm just going to accept it as an unlucky coincidence. I haven't had the CCV filter on long enough to notice any difference, but I do feel better having it on there.
DISCLAIMER: I am NOT in any way complaining or blaming NCHornets filter.I made a change to MY truck and I am just eliminatiing it as the cause to a reaction (oil leak). My action, an attempt to keep oil out of my intake system, resulted in an equal and opposite reaction, dumping oil all over the bottom of my truck and onto the ground.:hehe::rofl::hehe:
Haha, right on. I was just trying to help out if needed. Partly for the benefit of the OP in case he installs one too. Sorry to hear about the dipstick leak. I'm hoping I don't have to tackle that one any time soon.

i tired the ccv mod and right away got an oil leak out of some seal on the front of the engine. I posted about this when it happened. It was a VERY steady drip. No one thought it could have anything to do with it. I put it back to stock and oil stopped leaking. The hose was wide open, it was not on long enough to have oil build up. Only thing i did was turn the dog house around. No more ccv mod for me
Hmm, you guys have me second guessing installing the setup I already have. Why not just get the "oil proof" boots for the intake and forget about it? I hate messing with oil leaks.

Man, I want to do this mod after seeing all the oil under the boots today. But after reading about NEW oil leaks I'm not sure I want to do it. Does the CCV have any other negative effect other then the oil in the boots and cooler? Does the intake turn around normally work? Thanks!
I have sold over 400 of these and not once has it caused a leak , when installed properly. There is no way a truly open tube is going to be the cause of a oil leak. I have said this many times before, be very careful about experimenting as the 7.3 is very sensitive to backpressure and it can cause oil leaks. There is no backpressure with my system. Another thing, a simple breather filter placed on the dog house WILL NOT WORK!!! Our trucks breathe a lot of heavy oil vapors, this is why the high spot over the brake housing is very important, a breather would be so filled with oil so fast it would be a huge mess. There I just saved you all that trouble. I don't want to get in trouble with the mods here so if you want any further info contact me by PM or Raul at Stealth.
I just felt the need to clarify that there is no way for a CCV Mod to have caused a leak at the oil dipstick union. Even if the tube were plugged it wouldn't affect the oil pan!!! The only time I had a leak issue was when one of my customers used to long of a piece of hose and created a low spot in the feed line, the oil collected in this low spot. He lived in Alaska and the oil actually froze in the 40 below weather. But even without freezing the collected oil can cause enough back pressure to cause leaks. This is why I check my feed hose every oil change to see if there are any low spots. My first CCV Mod has been on my truck since early 03 and my intake boots look like new, ( pics in my sig, and some of seen my engine in person) and they have never been removed. This is a very worth while mod to do, and I believe every 7.3 and 6.0 should have it done. If we didn't do a mod because somebody attributed something bad to it, then we would all be stock. As I said any other discussion pertaining to the CCV Mod Raul sells will need to be done via PM.
Have a good weekend
Ok well I didn't buy a kit yet, I plan on it but I had everything apart so I turned the doghouse so its facing the firewall so it is ready for the mod. I just ran a tube straight off of it and down the firewall. Is this ok? ?!!?? It just vents under the cab for now but I bet it will smell nasty so I will get the stealth mod soon. Will what I did hurt anything????!!!
I have both my 00 F250 and my girls 05 Jeep Liberty CRD. For the time being I just installed tubing off the CCV's and ran in under along the frame. I talked to a few people on the jeep forums and they all recommended a filter called Provent. They said it stops the oil dripping and smell, now what the heck is to great about it that makes it cost over $150? I plan on using a filter from Stealth, is there any reason it wont work on the Jeep? DO you know if he sells just the filter with out the kit? Thanks!
As I told you in our PM be very careful about using this Provent on a PSD as they are very sensitive to backpressure. I have answered all your other questions in the PM. The kit from Stealth will work just as well on a Jeep.
Again thanks for the help.. I'm going to order up a few kits, have 3 diesels that could use it! Before I installed the hose I read about the smell of it and I figured I could deal with it, nope it Nasty! The filter really stops the stink, can you smell it at all? Are there any filters that need to be replaced?
There is no smell and no mess with my kit, and there is no filter that needs to be replaced. I have had mine on since early 03 and still going strong. I now seal all the canisters. Chris, remember I told you that I was out of town until Wed the 23rd, I have a couple kits with me. Depending on the orders that Stealth takes over the weekend I may have to wait until I return home to get all three in the mail to you. I just wanted to make sure you knew this and didn't think I was running off with the money. Actually Raul takes the money!!! Y'all have a great weekend, any ? on the CCV mod just PM me and I will answer ASAP.
Take Care
