Hello everyone was browsing the web tring to come up with some answers about a truck I just purchased and could find nothing then I decided to join your forum to seek some knowledge and hopefully some help. Ok so I bought this truck with knowing the engine was suppost to be bad but come to find out the guy said it wouldnt start anymore and thought it may be the IP. They started the truck on ether all the time... I brought the truck home put new batteries in it and put fuel in the tanks and no fuel. Tried some starting fluid and still nothing... Now this has me concerned shouldnt it fire on Starting fluid? By the way the glow plug controller was unhooked. Thanks for the help

Start by checking the mechanical fuel pump on the front right of the engine block, pull the line after it and see if it pumps out full while turning over, this can also be done by holding down teh schraeder valve above the fuel filter while someone crancks it over. THis also bleeds any air out. If you have fuel there then crack open a couple of injector lines and see if your getting fuel at the injectors.

Not that I like running anything on ether, but in this case, you say it won't fire on ether? That's weird.

I use gasoline on a rag to get temperamental diesels started. It is way less harsh than ether.

BTW the glow plug relay being unplugged is not a bad thing if you are trying to start with ether. If ether hits a hot glow plug, bad things happen. Gasoline vapor hitting a hot glow plug is not the best either, but not nearly as likely to explode as ether.

Next thing to think about is whether or not you have power to the fuel shut-off solenoid on top of the IP. There are 2 wires on the IP. One is the fuel shut-off, and the other is the cold start timing retard (or advance or something). Check to see if these are +12v when cranking. The fuel shut off one is the one on the driver's side.
