Okay, i am so anal about getting a full tank of fuel, and yes i will wait for 10 plus minutes to get that tank completely full. So with the Harpoon MOD being the cure for this problem i asked Scuffy828 (Scott) about doing it for me while i was there for SSS. total time was about 1 1/2 hours, but can easily be done in one hour or less depending on the knowledge of persons involved.
(NOTE: make sure that tank is empty as much as possible to make this easier to do)
Here the truck is on a lift ready for elevation for tank removal, granted most of you probably dont have access to a lift, but it can still be done.
next remove the tank skid plate.
next remove the two screws/bolts that hold the straps on the tank, when removed manually bend down the straps to keep them out of the way.
now use a transmission jack to secure the bottom of the tank and let it rest on the jack stand until you loosen the fuel hose neck assy,
it is also advisable to have a second person to hold the tank in place while you wrestle with the tank hose assy. (this is a Biotch) once you get the hoses loose make sure all other connections are undone then slowly start to lover the tank until the stand stops or until you fell comfortable with removing the tank from the stand. Also for this we removed the rear drive shaft for ease of tanks removal.
once the tank is on the ground/floor, unscrew and remove the ring from the fuel pump and then remove the fuel pump from the tank,
now it is time to locate the vent hose. (see pic) it is the one one the farthest end of the tank.
for cutting of the tube we used a pipe cutter that can handle a 3/4 diameter size pipe (cannot be cut very easily, debris can ruin your fuel and fuel pump) tube is very thick and strong. once complete the trimming of the tube, put the tank back together and re-assemble the whole tank and re-install in truck...(NOTE: there is about 1/2 inch of tube left in the tank, that is plenty left, you do not need to cut at top of tank)
the first time i filled up it went so much quicker and i got the extra 3-5 plus gallons to make me happy, so no more fuel gauge dropping 15 miles after I leave the pump.
a very special thanks to Scott @ Trucks Unlimited, Winston-Salem, NC.
NOTE: see the tube size, that is how much fuel you are cheated out of during fill up, unless you force it to fill up to the rim of the fuel neck!!
