D-max Suicide

I was at a gas station and heard a diesel make a WOT run past me. Noticed it was a d-max deully, but didn't give it much thought.

About 10 minutes later I'm going down the road and see the truck at the granger supply I was headed to. Stopped in, the guy had his hood open. I walk up to the guy to see what was wrong and see if I could offer some help. He said his truck went into limp mode. He didn't know jack about his tuner, but was really cool so I figured id help him out. Took a minute to figure out how to read/delete his code to get his truck running right.

He had an efi live tuner running a 120 tune. He asked what to do to keep it from happening again, so I told him he had a few options (1) keep his foot out of it (2) run a lower tune (3) buy a built tranny or, (4) the best option, buy a ford!

He proceeded to tell me that you the Allison is the best trans you can buy. I didn't have time to correct him, and he was pretty adamant about his trans being amazing, so I told him to surf some forums for about 2 weeks and give me a call.

The guy was really nice, and we ended up trading contact numbers because he needed some ac work done at his house, so it worked out smooth. I just feel sorry for him because he spent a boatload of money on tunes delete and intake that he can't use to its full potential. Oh well, you live and learn.

I just love hearing stories like this. Too dang funny. And i hear so much of that "allisons are the best transmission ever" crap. If people only knew what they was talking about before they opened there mouth and say stupid stuff.

It's not a bad trans, but it can't hold up to higher power levels like the torqshift.
What I don't like is how people think its the best thing ever. It's not bad, it's just not incredible either.

oh alright, i'm trying to decided between a 06-07 lbz (haven't found a good deal yet but i keep looking) or a 99 7.3 (a friend is selling his). I like the allison but don't really know that much about duramax's let alone all diesels lol

I'm far from a diesel guru, but I know if you look under a chebby it looks like a half ton (independent front suspension, small fasteners). But, if you look under a ford, it screams beefy. Big fasteners, solid axle, heavier brakes, etc. if you can find a well maintained 7.3, jump on it. It will last forever.
