Hard Start

Hey... It sounds like it might be your IPR valve. Sometimes they can bind or otherwise malfunction. When this happens, assuming it's not too far open, it can cause ICP to take longer to build up. Once you hit 500 psi, the engine will start. Also, if you used 15-40d oil, that can have a similar effect. Usually when this happens, you get a pretty terrible idle for a few minutes. Same goes for glow plugs and the glow plug relay.

Glow plug relay

It could be the glow plug relay. To test it, turn the key to the on position. Hook up a test light to battery negative. Find the relay, it is a little farther back than the fuel filter housing and on the passenger side of the truck. There will be two relays there that look very similar. The glow plug relay is more twords the back of the engine and is shorter. With the key on and test light hooked up, check for power at the two large terminals on top of the relay. If you have power at both, the relay is ok. If there is power at only one terminal, the relay is bad. You should also check your glow plugs seeing as how one bad plug can give you a hard start. Do this by unhooking the connector that goes into the valve cover. Put your test light on battery positive. If you look closely at the at the connector that is molded into the valve cover gasket, you'll see small terminals inside of it. The pins that provide power to the glow plugs are the first two and the last two. It will kinda look like this, xx-----xx, with the x's being the glow plug pins. Apply power with the test light to those pins and if it lights, the glow plugs are ok. You can also ohm them out with a multimeter attached to the glow plug pin with one lead, and battery negative with the other. You would want to see less than 5 ohms. Hope that helps...
