That's why she's my Ether Baby
Been a 7.3 owner for three years now ( 99.5, ext cab, F250). I had a baptism by fire when it comes to the inner workings of the 7.3. About six months after I bought the truck I just left my house and all of the sudden it felt like I had a dead cylinder and had blow by so bad it was shooting oil out of the dip stick
. I consulted a local diesel shop they told me I needed a new motor (they said they wouldn't do a piston and ring job on mine). They quoted me 10K for the new motor. That was more than I paid for the truck so I decided to take on the project myself. When I got it apart I found 8 cracked pistons and the one that was giving the dead cylinder had a hole blown right threw the piston, crack down the side and a quarter size chunk missing from the side. I count myself lucky it didn't come apart and destroy the block. Hence the name ether baby. When I got the truck home, after buying it, I had found a mostly used can of ether in the tool box and tested the glow plugs and found half were bad. It's been 15K since the rebuild and the truck is running strong now it's time for mods .
