95 7.3 powerstroke relay/starter issues

Hi my name is Jenn and I have a 95 7.3 f250 turbo diesel. I have read alot of posts about the 7.3 relay issues so I just tryed to replace my relay, and when I put the new one(a napa Part) in, my starter wont turn over so I then put back in my old relay and the starter works. I am at a loss as to what to do. I tryed using my voltmeter to check across for power and am not sure why I get 12.7v across between the two large posts on both of the relays, If it is a relay shouldn't it only switch on when the key is on to the wait light? Any help would be appreciated.

Are you changing the starter relay or the the glow plug relay?

I believe i am changing the glowplug relay. do they look the same?

Yep the glowplug is on the front top of motor passenger side. Its a 4 post relay.

The only relay I can see is on the passenger side, to the rear of the battery, beside the antifreeze resevour, mounted to the side of the chassie but it only has 3 posts? Am I just not seeing the glowplug relay?

Yeah thats your starting relay for the starting circuit. The glow plug relay should be where I said it was near the fuel filter housing. Give it a look one more time should be there
