yea, they are a pre-historic fish...the only bone in them is the jaw bone, every thing else is cartilage.....they have smooth skin...no scales. They feed on microscopic zooplankton by filtering through thier gills like a whale. So yes, you snag them with 9-12 foot long ocean rods with 10-0 treble hooks and 4-10 ounces of wieght to keep it down depending on river flow. You come home sore as heck afterwards. Some trips we land 8-15 a piece....it is legal to snag and release where we fish though, not in all areas. We can (unless new proposed regulation take effect) keep two fish per year and snag and release as many as we want as long as we have one valit tag in our hands. Other years we have been lucky to land one for our whole party of guys. Depends on if you hit it right or not. You snag them in the spring when they are going up to spawn, and while river flow and temperature affect it, there is no exact science. The year i cought the one in that pic (i think that was 2001, maybe 2002) i landed 17 fish and got greedy, i ended up eating one tag because i kept thinking "i can catch another one".....on year i didnt tag or snag a fish....
